Annoyed With My MP
Comments
-
If you don't get a reply in a couple of weeks its a bad form. However you have to remember that an MP represents at least 60,000 and probably only has a staff of one or two people. Therefore it will take a bit of time to respond to every email.
Twitter is easy to update and requires very little time to use. I doubt you would be happy with just a quick response so you have to give him time to resolve the question. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. THAT'S sarcasm!
And you evidently cannot spot sarcasm!!!!!0 -
MPs work very hard, but they also do have a generous staffing allowance to ensure that their constituents are replied to. I can't see any substantive reason, personally, why they can't acknowledge a constituent promptly.
In many cases people write to their MP out of desperation and in need of help. In my view MPs should ensure they're acknowledged, and given a rough time scale of how long they might have to wait.
Last time I e-mailed my MP (the only time actually) he sent a letter the same day, and said he'd look into it. He made the effort of forwarding my e-mail to a Cabinet Minister (which wasn't necessary, but was appreciated), who replied to him, and he forwarded that correspondence on. He then e-mailed a few weeks after to see if I was happy with what he had done. I don't naturally support the party he represents, but I shall likely vote for him next time round.
Which is ultimately all that you can do, don't vote for them next time round.0 -

I think you are right, there should be a service level agreement stating by when they will get back to you.
I emailed Eric Pickles today and got an automated reply stating this
"Thank you for your email to the Rt Hon Eric Pickles MP, the Secretary of State at the Department for Communities and Local Government.
Our aim is to consider the issues you raise and to respond within 15 working days.
If we feel that the issues raised do not fall within the Department's responsibilities, we will try to transfer your email to the relevant government department and ask that they reply to you directly.

Have you picked up the phone and spoken to their constituency office, to confirm they received the email?0 -
Try using the write to them website
http://www.writetothem.com/
As well as sending your letter to your MP, they will follow up to see if you got a response or not.0 -
I do suggest that you follow up by snail mail and/or telephone.
At one point I spent a lot of time and effort composing a thought-out message to my MP. I sent it electronically, using the 'contact' option given on his website. After some weeks with no response, I telephoned his office, only to be told that there was a known 'technical issue' meaning that electronic messages did not arrive. The secretary commented that most people found that the simple action of writing to an MP made them feel happier, and so it did not matter that the messages were never read!0 -
