Yep that was a bad part of the job, what they didn't grasp was its not the extra insurance but the margin they need.
An inkjet printers average margin was around 18-22%which is poor considering rents, staff cost etc. If they had instead tried selling you extra cartridges and paper (which you may have needed), these carry far higher margins (40%+), and they survive without the daft insurance.
They are better at understanding margins these days but in the past they only had the one eye firmly on the insurance.
Insurance has always been a good sell if it is targeted right and isn't sold badly. I would have thought the margins on that side of the business would dwarf the ink margin and be a relatively easy push with new technology, back then.

Not a good sale if its sold by CurrysPCWorld as that means they won't honour their legal obligations to replace defective items, and will send away things that need fixing to Mastercare, who from experience struggled to keep track of where your item was in their system never mind actually fixing it.
Still, a favourite trick used to be haggle a massive discount off the item in exchange for taking out cover, then cancelling the cover when back home.0 -

Apart form cheap as chips basic stuff, which is probably as cheap elsewhere, why would any one want too buy high end tech stuff of a company that is going to shut their doors.
I know stuff is generally much more reliable these days but if things go wrong?

My experience when Woolworths was closing, is that it was only the rubbish being sold off cheap. Things such as a woolworth iron for a fiver. All the decent stuff had dissapeared, probably to business. Certainly there were no offers on DVD's, Music, Electronics.
Will comet really have a fire sale? Or will a company buy up load of stock?0 -

Any company buying up stock before customers will have to wait in line after the staff have had the pick of the sales first.
They will definitely sell the stock retail but you wont see big discounts until its the rubbish nobody else wants.
What the adminstror needs to do is have enough stock to get them through to xmas, assess the situation re savable bids etc.
'If' it has to close the discounting will start with 10% off until the stock is run down, there is no point flogging stuff at a heafty discount when its a time when folk will take it off your hands with just a small discount applied.
I know as I have done it in 2 other electrical retailers and saw it with best bye bye.0 -
The Comet website on Facebook, says their new look website will be available from 28 November 2012, with Condition Gadgets UK as a new member of their 'fresh retail family'. It looks like Comet and new associates will operate through the Internet only. I wonder if they will re - employ any of their staff who will be made redundant by this move? Will they help previous customers with existing problems?0
