I'd stay right out of this. Unless you've been personally affected by it, then it's not your concern, and you could be open to libel action.

If you have been affected, then take any action in the appropriate way.

I shouldn't think any newspaper would take the ad anyway, as they are partly responsible for what appears in their publication.

I don't know why anyone would do this, but, it can't be libel if the OP stated the fact that 'John Smith' was to appear in court.

If the advert stated Mr Smith did these things that he is accused of that would be a different altogether.
Well life is harsh, hug me don't reject me.

Maybe the local newspaper would like a tip off about one of its former residents?

My local paper often writes articles about local residents who have committed crimes elsewhere, so maybe this one will too. Leave it up to the paper to decide if they want to run with the story or not. Then stay out of it.

He's only been charged with the offence (and is therefore guilty of nothing yet).

The rest was about "debts left"- something which may be immoral, but isn't usually illegal.

I can't see why anyone would be interested in what an ex-neighbour may or may not have done.

The obvious MS answer is that it would be better to see if the local paper wants to run a paragraph, without having to pay for an advert which they probably wouldn't take. Morglin can't see why people would be interested, but as katgoddess says, there are often bits about former residents in local papers. And local papers still sell! Half of ours seems to be crime related ...

I wouldn’t be interested in what ex-neighbours were up to UNLESS they owed me money and had run away to a different town to avoid paying me.

In that case I’d be very interested to hear that they were due in court on a particular day either for a surprise personal reunion or to lift his new address off the court list

Put the advert in, as long as it’s true it can’t be libel although I’m curious as to why you want to get involved. Are you the new neighbour who has been burgled?

    Hi,
Libel 'lowers the esteem of the person in the eyes of right-minded people'.
Defamation action are usually only for the wealthy as costs are horrific.
Me, I have this odd view 'innocent until proven guilty!!
