Police speed detector van

Think I may have got caught by one of these today. Totally my own fault as I was distracted worrying about something else and just thought initially it was an ambulance parked in a lay-by. Then I saw the pictures of cameras on the back and of course Police on the side:eek:

Just so annoying because I am usually so careful driving in this particular place and people often overtake me doing considerable speeds, but of course no van there then. I was not anything particularly excessive.

I thought the back doors of these detector vans had to be open for them to check you. What is the distance that they can read your speed from, does anyone know? Of course when I realized what it was I hit the brakes, but probably far too late:(

    The back window opens.

Distance= Up to 1km depending on their view & conditions.

Only way to know if they got you is to wait 14 days & see if a NIP appears (assuming you haven't recently changed address or car)

OMG, that far? Even round a bend? Will now be stressed out for the next couple of weeks.

Do you think 3 points has a really bad impact on your insurance premium?

No they can't see around bends - line of sight only.

3 points shouldn't have much impact really but that will depend on your own insurers attitude to points.

No point getting stressed yet :) No they can't see round bends which is why I put "depending on their view".

If you weren't speeding excessively then you may be offered a speed awareness course which saves you getting the 3 points but does cost.

3 points on a previously clean licence isn't too bad but depends on the insurer.

Chill out 'till you know for sure but keep the speed down ;)

If you weren't driving like you stole it but still over the limit you may be offered a Speed Awareness course.

Costs about £80 and half a day but no points, no brainer.

Did you see any movement at the rear window of the van. It's possible the operator was having his lunch/tea break/ciggie or just setting up or finishing. It's also possible he got his quota for the day.

If you do get caught, and your speed wasn't excessive, it's likely you will get offered a speed awareness course. If you are the RK, the NIP/172 is usually with you pretty quickly.

Unfortunately, these days, you have to sacrifice a little bit of safe driving to contend with the speed cam hazard. You may not like it, it may add a little more danger to the road, but them's the rules.
Make everything as simple as possible, but not simpler.
