You are so right about these agencies snubbing you once they hear you have been out of work for six months or more. It's disgusting.

It is not a barrier it's a fact about agencies. I have it in writing from Page that they do not deal with people who have been out of work for more than 6 mths. So after 6 mths you are dropped if you are still on their books.
I am a VERY good candidate with many years experience but I can not make someone interview me. I'd like someone tell me how I can get interviews.

    Hi samuela66

Thank you for your reply. It's very reassuring to know that I am not the only one who is suffering this unemployment Merseyside hell (those who are quick to shout us down on these boards should take note of our plight and be a bit more understanding). Having suffered yet another depressing day of the silent phone (what the hell is wrong with all these employers?), I am beginning to give up all hope of EVER getting a job on Merseyside. Even if they opened up some big offices here tomorrow, it would still be hard to get a job as doubtless there would be THOUSANDS chasing each of the vacancies!

It is so horrible being unemployed. I wish to God the economy would improve so that we could all start harbouring some hope that we will eventually get a job. (Heaves a long, wistful sigh) Wishful thinking at the moment, unfortunately.

    Hi Truegho,

My sentiments exactly, haven't read all he replies, but my God I am in Merseyside and I cannot tell you how many applications I have made.................but 99 times out of a 100 no reply, surely they could get an email template of "Thanks but no thanks!"

I applied for a Doctors receptionist job last week, she called me in for an interview and I explained I couldnt make that exact time as I was in my temping job, she said she would call me back and never even bothered.....

    It's just pure ignorance!!

Great attitude, mate. Dunno why employers aren't flocking to your door.

Have you thought of having your CV looked over invade it can be improved? Or perhaps altering its appearance so that it stands out?

Have you thought about voluntary work at all? Or going self employed, perhaps?

  • Going to try adjusting my CV following some of the advice here. Got to be worth a go. I'm getting interviews now and then, doing well at the interviews and getting decent feedback, yet no job :( It's very depressing, but I'm persevering. Managed to get into the Royal Mail (again) for Xmas time, so at least I'll be able to sign off for a month or so.

Hi. Thank you for your reply. Yes, I have had my CV revamped many times - and by many professionals too - so I don't think it needs any more doing to it. It's just a case of the right employer seeing it and being attracted by all the admin and customer service skills I have to offer. Not easy, in this horrible, horrible economy.

Yes, have thought of both. Am still pursuing both avenues in the hope that one or both will lead to a suitable alternative to a paying employer . . . at least for the time being.

Post your CV (or a link to it) on here so employers on these forums can look at it and advise.

Your CV shouldnt need to be revamped "many times" (and by more than one professional). That speaks volumes that it isn't right in the first place and isn't right in it's second/third/fourth etc incarnation.

It depends. I've had my CV revamped "many times" on various courses I've been on and almost always for the worse. I finally realised that most of the "revamps" were done just so they could say they had done something.

When I started signing on I submitted my original cv (with a few tweeks that I'd learnt from courses) to the next steps careers advisor who said it was fine and didn't need any work on it. I then showed him copies of the "revamped" versions for comparison and to ask his opinion on which version was the best to send on spec and he dismissed all but my original one.

No, no, no, you misunderstand me. My CV has NOT been revamped dozens of times, but just one or two.
