What does the word 'staycation' mean to you?

It means nothing. It's a non-word. The idea behind it is not going away on holiday. It's a play on the word 'vacation' which is what the Americans call a holiday. In the UK we say 'holiday' not vacation. Nothing new about not going away, or not going abroad.

Thanks. It was recently added to the Oxford dictionary, however, so can perhaps be described as a 'word' at least.

I think it depends on whether the person using the word generally goes on holiday abroad or in the UK.
If you generally have your holidays in the UK (as we do) there is no reason to all of a sudden start calling them "staycations". Therefore to me the word would only have meaning in the form of "time off from work to do holiday-type things without going away, e.g. day-trips, lazy days, spending time with family, spending time in the garden / local park / etc, London museums. Personally doing DIY wouldn't quite fit with this.
But for people who generally go abroad on holiday I can see it has the other meaning. There is a poster advert on the underground that reads "Don't staycation, Allez en vacances!", which obviously has this second meaning.

I can't imagine the likes of Haven, Butlins and Centreparks using the word to encourage people to go there rather than go abroad.

Staying at home instead of going away is how I readit.

I've heard it used as any holiday taken in your country of residence (so, for example, someone who lives in London going to the Lake District on holiday). Personally, I'd only consider it a staycation if I was taking time off work but staying at home - by which I mean my own house.

Personally I think it's a load of old ballocks (alternative spelling according to the OED which is handy because it allows me to bypass the profanity filter

It would only mean a holiday in the country where you live to those who have got used to holidays only being taken abroad. My interpretation is that it is a holiday where you stay at home (i.e. in your house) and do day-trips and activities etc.
