The OED isn't permissive, it's descriptive. Or to put it another way, it merely reports on how language is being used; it doesn't 'allow' anything.

Thanks - I think this is right - as demonstrated by the responses here.

I was just keen to understand the most common interpretation of the term.

I think the word is only used by middle class chavs.

:rotfl:Yes, it's definitely not a word I use. I'm either going on holiday or staying at home-not going on vacation or having a staycation.

To me it means staying at home and possibly having days out. I always have my holidays in Britain and don't think of that as a staycation as I'm not staying.
Lost my soulmate so life is empty.

It's an Americanism beloved of lazy journalists.

The British version, which I've just invented, is stoliday.

Staycation: taking annual leave to do the decorating before 'er indoors strangles me.

I think it means you stay at home, don't go away, don't stay overnight in "paid for accommodation" - and, most likely, don't go out and do much locally really. Just put your feet up and potter around your house, sorting things out, doing things you normally don't have time for - and watching lots of daytime telly.
