What happened to the OP sounds horrific, and in my opinion she is perfectly entitled to seek compensation should she so have wished. The cost of the journeys to her doctor to have her dressings changed is reason enough, not to mention the shock, pain and distress she was caused.

If coffee is hot enough to take skin off a limb, then it is surely too hot to drink, so why on earth do these places have to serve it at scalding point?

Not if enough people have as gross a misunderstanding as you do as to the purpose of accident and incident books and therefore don't fill them out when they should. Still, you are not born knowing what the book is for and it's obvious no-one has ever sought to enlighten you before.
