new to this site so hope i am posting in right place

hi:j

I am looking for some advice about an incident that happened to me at a large burger chain at the weekend. my husband purchased a coffee for me and as he gave me it the lid popped off and the boiling black coffee went over my arm , i now have a very large burn which is requiring dressings 3 times a week at the doctors, my question really is the staffs attitude , the toilet sink was that small i couldnt get my arm under the tap , ask a member of staff for some first aid (i am 1st aid trained myself) they came back with a j cloth ! and a cup of ice and another cup of coffee !!!! ias the skin was dropping from my arm we left for the hospital. they didnt ask for my name and there was no mention of an accident book where to i stand about complaining about there first aid facilities ??? i am not after compensation just dont want this to happen to anyone else, espically a child. thanks

Surely then if you are not after comp, then your best bet would be to contact the burger chain H.O

I'm not sure I follow what the vent is? I'm sorry to hear of your injury and hope its better soon. If you want to complain about a branch, then write to the local manager and if you're not satisfied, then escalate to their Head Office.

I really don't understand though why you think a burger chain should provide first aid facilities for customers?

That appears to me to be an wholly unrealistic expectation. However, it appears from your post that they did provide ice (which is what I would have done for a minor burn). If it was a major burn then you should have gone to hospitol/ called for an ambulance immediately rather than wait.

I believe that any firm that employs over 5 people must have a H&S policy, an accident book and a first aid kit (for employees), but as far as I'm aware, there isn't a requirment for trained first aiders in the H&S legislation. Where I work we have trained first aiders, but they're not for the public, that's why we have the NHS and an ambulance service. If I recall my own St John's ambulance course correctly, the trainer told us that off duty nurses & paramedics are told not to help members of the public as they obviously won't have their normal equipment with them, and if someone decides they've not received adequate care, they might well then sue the LHA who won't have a leg to stand on. Just my 2p worth.

Well by having an accident book etc won't prevent this from happening. Thats something that is used after an accident, it won't stop the lid from popping off in the first place though!

Any area that deals with the public should have first aiders. An accident book should be provided at every place of employment and if any 'serious' accident happens at this place (whether employee, customer or passerby) it has to be recorded and that is the law (well that's what the St John's Ambulance people told me on my course)

Hope you get better soon & recover well!

oh and in response to Zara33 my nieces and nephews all drink hot chocolate like it's going out of fashion - what insensitive drivel you sprout!

    :T Thanks!! :T

Edit to say: surely you don't just hand a child a plastic cup of hot chocolate without firstly checking a) it isn't too hot and b) that the lid is on securely or is that just another unrealistic thing a parent is not supposed to think about

A J Cloth with ice sounds like the perfect first aid treatment for a minor burn.
  • Poor you - a similar thing happened to my sister in law on holiday a couple of years ago. A cup of coffee was knocked over and she burnt her thigh which required dressing at the hospital for 3 weeks!! The coffee just missed her year old baby who was sat beside her in a buggy.....he would have been scarred for life.
She didn't claim any compensation either but did contact the management of the place to let them know what had happened. I think that stores shouldn't be putting scalding hot liquids onto tables - the hot drinks you buy in places these days are often too hot to drink for 20 minutes!! Perhaps the health and safety exec. or whoever should be looking into this.
Hope your burn is better now and do tell people what happened - I NEVER buy a hot drink in a fast food store now if I have my children with me - just in case....

'friad you're incorrect. Following quote is from Health & Safety Executive.

"Following the review of the First Aid Regulations, HSE will not be seeking to make provision of first aid for the public a compulsory requirement for employers."

Can you imagine how many corner shops or village stores would fold under the legislation & cost?
