  • I don't know if it would have any effect, but it might be an idea to report it here:
    http://www.actionfraud.police.uk/

You can report fraud using our online fraud reporting
    service
any time of the day or night; the service enables
you to both report a fraud and find help and support. We also provide help and
advice over the phone through the Action Fraud contact centre. You can talk to
our fraud specialists by calling 0300 123 2040.
Reports taken are passed to the police who may contact you for further
information. Action Fraud does not investigate the cases and cannot advise you
on the progress of a case.

As they pass any reports onto the police for investigation, you may get more interest and action by doing it this way and you may also be able to get further advice on what to do next.

So because Barclays won't follow up you think they are aiding an abetting the scam artists?

Sorry, but what in your opinion they should do and what they do do is really not up to you to decide and to label them as knowingly doing nothing.

You are one person, with four examples in a network of banks that process billions of transactions a day. If you hadn't put the money where you put it there wouldn't be any fraud to fix.

Why are you trying to get the middle of the chain to fix something the beginning (thats you) caused to exist in the first place.

If people didn't willingly send money to these people then you would still have to use a gun and rob a bank, as it is you throw the cash their way and then scream the banks need to do something...

Sorry, but you start the process in what you do, what happens from there on out, well, ultimately its your fault.

This is such a common scam, I would have thought anyone who had been online for a few months would be aware of it.

There are already several warnings about it on various forums here on MSE.

All it shows is that you can't warn people who don't want to be warned as all they are seeing is a bargain.

This is the older more complicated version of the scam (they have simplified it as naive buyers don't even need any pretence)

You then say you reported it to your bank.
What have you reported to your bank?
You have not yet told us anything worth reporting.
And still you have not answered that.

Shall we just assume that the recipient of your money has not supplied whatever you think you have purchased?

Bit harsh given the number of scams on the go at anytime and how they evolve.

A good example of this is the face cream/weight loss products which you simply pay postage and packing and get signed upto a monthly deal...
These have been going for at least 4 years. have been plastered all over the internet/TV/Papers. Yet hundreds fall for this on a daily basis.

Given the OP has already found a few others in the same situation. It would be good if the likes of Gumtree would take action on these people. Perhaps even to the point of making security checks on people offering things for sale on a regular basis.

Gum tree is not fully monitored, it is considered a face to face venue so they are expecting people to use cash. The bank transfer scam though is everywhere, it only takes a smidgen of common sense to see through it and is covered on TV programmes, on the Internet in the newspapers. No amount of warnings will stop people falling for it , they just see an item they want and go for it.

If gum tree employed thousands of people to check out the tens of thousands of adverts placed on it, then people would have to pay for the service- and half the attraction of gum tree is that for private sellers it is free to use. If you did a poll today and asked people would they pay say 50p an item to list on gum tree to provide support or protection for those buyers who for whatever reason fail to protect themselves- then I suspect the answer would be a resounding no.

One for our warnings board, I reckon... so I'll move it across.
