I am trying to warn people of scammers mainly on GUMTREE, but also ebay, now I know this is no new news but as I have been on the internet so long and know all the pitfalls, it surprised even me that I,ME, who keeps helping others if same happens actually allowed it to happen to myself. So desperate for tickets to a show, freely without thinking handed over £300 straight into a barclays account, to someone claiming they were in Wales but really a bank account in London. I reported it to my bank who told me I was to wait 7days, if no money went back into my account then I was to call back on the 7th day which is Tuesday of this week(something about it then becoming like an unpaid bill)Contacted Gumtree, who while first email seemed like they were thankfull I had brought this to their attention and to keep them up to date with anything further I could find to help them put a stop to it.Thereafter, all I have back is automated emails. VERY INTERESTED? now someone else has contacted me a week later telling me he had just been scammed by same person but only found my posting after the fact and through GUMTREE. WOW! Another man has tried relentlessly to have Barclays bank put a stop to this. All they say is they cannot discuss accounts. If there has been 4 people I know of then I dread to think how many more. Barclays are really aiding and abetting criminal activity are they not? When people call/email them giving them the account number/name they have sent money to which has turned out to be a scam, surely they have a right to atleast check the info even if not discussing, they will know we are telling the truth as our bank account numbers/names will be shown against their accounts! But still it's ongoing, Every other bank I know of if giving someone a new account cannot until they show proof of I.D. These same amounts we have told barclays about is forwarded to another almost straight away, into a swift account number. We have given every detail found so far and as one man told me
" I have phoned other banks about same scam and they took serious however Barclays Bank refused to even look at this account due to “data protection” wouldn’t keep tabs on it when I warned them so let scammer have access to a bank they can walk in and take out stolen money…. Back in the day people needed a gun to commit such robberies now the banks seem to help them…. It’s a total joke and this marketplace needs cleaned up ASAP".
If anyone can tell me where would be thee best place to highlight this specially on the run up to Christmas, I would feel a lot better knowing I have saved someone else from going through the nightmare this has me in. Honestly was agast at Barclays attitude towards this. YES I made a mistake, YES Barclays, I do feel so foolish to have been duped like this. But most of all YES I am totaly shocked that Barclays knowingly are doing NOTHING!!
I wish Martin could see this and mention it even once on live tv. I wonder what their answer would be then?
Data Protection for thieves ?. Well, we do live in never ending changing times, surely bad isnt winning over good nowadays, and protected for that fact lol.
T/y for taking time to read and please spread this anywhere you think needed. I have all names, accounts, sort codes, not sure if I myself would be "protected" if it turned out I would be breaking the law by publishing them lol.

If the money is being sent to another account straight away, you will likely find the barclays account they are using is either stolen or has been fraudulently set up by them in someone elses name.
So the DPA may not be around protecting the scammers, just protecting further victims of theirs.
If you want to raise awareness, perhaps contact your local trading standards or even your local newspaper and ask if they would be interested in raising awareness for people to protect themselves from possible scams over the xmas period. You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0 -
Hi Unholy angel, whilst I do understand what you are saying, and believe me, I am trying to reach as many as possible, but this instance of scamming is from an area in London, same bank sort code therefore, same branch and this has been reported to them a number of times so much so, that I would think it rendered them checking and coming up with some sort of solution. I will endeavour to have my fears, subjects raised, answered as fully as I can and let people know the outcome. The more people find messages like mine, means the more people reporting same. If you have no morals? what they have achieved is thee perfect "quick money earner" if you can live with yourself that is.0

Given you now know of a few people. Have you gone to the police. If a few raise a issue they will take it forward with Barclays. As they have the power to request further details of who the account is run by.Never ASSUME anything its makes a>>> A55 of U & ME <<<0

Hi dalesrider, yes I have reported this to police, they were not very positive I'm afraid but will be back to them this week. The people I now know of are spread all over the uk though, but if we all follow each others lead, something positive is surely bound to happen. I wont hold breath back waiting lol thanks for answering...0

Hang on... What exactly is the problem?
You have told us that you transferred some money to a bank account in London.
What does it matter where the account holder lives or where he banks?
You then say you reported it to your bank.
What have you reported to your bank?
You have not yet told us anything worth reporting.
You say "Another man has tried relentlessly to have Barclays bank put a stop to this".
Put a stop to what?
Anyway...
It seems quite clear that you have willing transferred £300 to someone else's bank account and it appears that the owner of that account is "less than honest".
If you ask your bank to send some of your money to another bank account, you must expect that to happen.
If that other bank account happens to be at Barclays, so what?
That account holder is of course free to move the money you freely gave him anywhere he likes.
You are now looking for someone, Barclays Bank, to blame for your carelessness.
Oh... there are no consumer rights issues here.0 -
I in no way am looking for someone else to blame for my own stupidity. Anybody else who has read or heard from myself regarding this issue know exactly why I chose to highlight this and to highlight it to BARCLAYS for reasons I wont try and explain any further to you. I couldnt explain any easier than I have done already. No "standing in a corner stamping feet wanting my money back" I assure anyone reading here. I was really stupid, I have payed for my stupidity literally! Therefore attempting to warn other's, while attempting to make thing's tougher for the criminals at the same time. If that is seen by some people as "looking for someone else to blame" I am at great pains to understand that kind of attitude. Who would take the wrong context out of someone attempting to stop the flow of this so easy made money to a criminal. I havent pointed blame at anyone than myself. I have merely asked that it is not made so easy for them to work from their Barclays account. What a horrible world we live in at times. When I am wrong I am first to stand up and take the consequence's for my action's. But I wont allow anyone to bully me into not bringing it to the attention of the public who are the aim for this type of criminal.
"Oh and there are no consumer issues here" ?
Only reason this is posted here is because it was the only place that came up after searching for a suitable place.
Thank you for using precious time to read, think & answer this post.

Barclays have done nothing wrong here really.
YOU sent money to an account willingly, what would you expect them to do ?
If you have evidence which may identify the person who has your money, you should take this up with the Police, who then MIGHT take it up with Barclays. But then again they might not. It won't be high on their list of things to investigate.0
