Some people are totally seduced by commercialism.
Some people spend so much.
Some people buy so much food that you would think the shops were shut for years.

OMG brings back memories of when I worked at Mr A - honestly, you'd get people going through with 2 HUGE trolleys absolutely overflowing with stuff ..... shop was only shut for 1 day:eek:Grocery Challenge £211/£455 (01/01-31/03)

I'm always amazed by the amount you see some people buying around xmas time! You'd think the shops were going to be shut for WEEKS! They go mad.
Frankly, I'm also shocked by the amount some people buy their kids... Every year I do some xmas shopping with a dear friend of mine (more as a "we'll do this so we'll definately see each other at least once a year" thing, rather than a "lets do all our xmas shopping" thing), and she really goes to town!
I remember one year she got her daughter, then aged about 13 or 14 a Radley handbag as her main present... I thought "fine, fair enough", but if that had been my kid she wouldn't have got any more than a selection box after that!
But no... Friend then got her kid a quite expensive La Senza PJ set, a Converse shoulder bag, smellies, some cake-making stuff. Then a £50 iTunes card "oh just as a stocking stuffer!" THEN she told me she'd probably get some more stuff in later trips.
I was really shocked. Obviously didn't say anything, but know the family aren't hugely well-off... Kids are also going to get a shock when they leave home and have no concept of money and can no longer buy all their outfits from Hollister and Superdry, where it's £60 for a pretty average-looking jumper.
Oh, and don't even get me started on the day friend bought daughter a Pandora bracelet "because she's been a bit down".
FORTUNATELY, this child is lovely. Polite, friendly, all that good stuff. But I can't help but think that she's being set up to learn some money lessons the Hard Way a few years from now.Because it's fun to have money!

NSD #24 for me yesterday mostly helped by the fact that I genuinely forgot to take my purse shopping with me
It was slightly embarrassing when I offered to buy the coffees and then discovered I couldn't
Never mind, I probably saved myself a fortune

Neither can I flubberand I sooooo agree with the concept of money thing. It's repeated time & again on here too - people who've got themselves into money trouble & can't afford to spend the £300 - £600 (seriously! I saw someone saying this is what they had been spending to now!) on C anymore and not sure how to explain to the kids that Santa can't buy big presents this year.
Kids don't need huge expensive presents - when we were growing up, we - as I'm sure many others did - got clothes we needed, books etc and spending £000s is ridiculous.
I really worry about this generation - mine is bad enough with buying stuff on credit without having to save up for it (which our parents had to & maybe partly why we do it?) but now ... they have all these gadgets and have no idea of the value of money - eg some of their mobiles cost £000s .... do they have any concept of this?freebyfifty wrote: »helped by the fact that I genuinely forgot to take my purse shopping with meIt was slightly embarrassing when I offered to buy the coffees and then discovered I couldn't
