The Work Program is not the same thing as WFIs's. You should not be referred to the Work Program (with an outside company) while appealing against a WRAG decision, but you are obliged to attend WFIs is asked to do so.

I really don't understand why people place so much importance on getting into the magic 'support' group... and thus far I've heard nothing..

That is good news Parva and good luck with your future dealings with the DWP on this and trying to get on with life. However, not everyone has the same experiences
To re-iterate, if you truly are that unwell or unfit then being placed in the WRAG should not worry you at all.

My partner was placed in the WRAG group and I tried to tell them that she wasn't well enough and we were appealing the decision. However were were told that she must go.
I took time from work to take her in - The interview wasn't brilliant as the advisor clearly wasn't trained in dealing with people with such problems (not her fault) but by the end of it she said that we should appeal (we had already done so) as my partner clearly wasn't appropriate for WRAG activities at that time.

We thought that this would be the end of it until we heard about the appeal but in the meantime she was told she should be seeing full time work and got calls which were very intimidating to her which didn't help her condition at all (in fact, after one, she was found in the street by a neighbour who called me home from work, this was because she didn't want to be in the house to get more calls from JCP which she didn't understand and the advisor refused to call me and kept reiterating instructions incomprehensible to my partner).

Hopefully though, not everyone's experiences are like this.

Sorry to hear of your woes. :( I did a year in the WRAG and as of January gone went straight into the support group on presentation of my ESA50. Not sure if I didn't word my original ESA50 right or something but if ATOS wish to assess me I have no issues with it.
