If you don't answer and the call goes to an answer machine, the call will be registered as such on the automated dialer - they will ring you again and again.

Annoying as it is, for UK companies the best thing is to get the company details and ask to be removed from the list. If they persist in calling you (it may take a couple of weeks for your details to be removed) you can complain to the regulator and they may be fined.

Overseas callers do not have the same regulations so I don't know if it's better to ignore, string along, or ask them not to call again.

My Panasonic telephone announces the name for those in my address book and number for others. Thus I have the option to let the call go to answering machine. I can also bar those numbers I do not wish to accept calls from.

  • We have been receiving these calls , sometimes four and five in one day,we let all of them go to answerphone ,we have have caller ID too, and when we get no message we know they are unsolictited calls. Today the latest is from a company called BCM? it was hard to hear what the person was saying, but what I did catch was that it was to do with pensions and new government legislation. Do these people think we are daft? I don't normally answer, as I said, but today I was curious as to who was calling, I then told her I was on the telephone preference service and told her I was going to report them. Funnily the line went quiet! Lets see if they ring again...I keep a log of all the unsolicited calls I receive too and the times that they occur. I am quite capable of dealing with the people on the other end of the phone but there are lots of people out there who fall into the trap!
