Cold Calls

Like a lot of other people I am being driven to distraction by scam and marketing telephone calls all hours of the day and evening.
What I do now is pick up the phone and don't say anything. When I know it is one of these calls I stay connected but leave the phone and walk away. Eventually the caller hangs up but I don't. I leave the phone for about another 20 mins before I hang up.
I am hoping that by not hanging up it means that they can't ring out again on that line until I have put the phone down. Am I right does anyone know or is it just wishful thinking on my part?
Would be very interested to know.

The caller is the one who can disconnect. They can hang up at any point and the call will end.
Why not register with the TPS? It stopped the majority of UK based calls for me, and I only get a very small amount of overseas ones. Some days, it's just not worth chewing through the leather straps....

You're hoping to potentially put somebody out of a job?

They should get a job which does not involve harassing people in their own home uninvited!0 -
Have registered with TPS but it hasn't made a lot of difference at the moment but thanks for the thought.
With all the technology these days you would think that BT could have come up with some kind of system by now whereby you can reject a call once and in doing so it stops future calls from that number reaching you again in the future. Perhaps one day ...
As for putting someone out of a job. Good I hope I do. One less annoying person to make unsolicited calls. Let's face it, most of the calls are some sort of scam so if it saves one person from getting fleeced I consider it a job well done.0 -
We are registered with TPS and rarely give out our home telephone number. Now and again we get cold callers but really, it doesn't happen often.
We have Panasonic phones and they have call barring facility on them. I know it doesn't help with international calls but we just don't pick up when they ring - the callers never leave a message on the answerphone
I've also got into the habit of finding out who is cold calling and asking them to remove my details from their lists. I often do this by email after a bit of detective work on Google.
In a nutshell
1, register with TPS
2. ask every caller to remove your details from contact lists either by phone or email
3. don't pick up when you don't recognise the number - they will leave a message on the answerphone if it's important.0 -
Luckily I have BT privacy Caller Display service and a Dect phone.
I can assign a different ringtone to differentiate between callers.
I have been getting a few International calls lately which I can silence / ignore!
I am with TPS which has stopped most.

Some of these callers (it comes up international on my phone) will not listen to reason as they seem to be reading off a set script.
They always ask for me by name then start the same spiel re ppi insurance or the "much bad problem with your computer sir".
I even tried a few weeks back when I was rang about missold ppi telling them "im so sorry but mr ..(my name) died a few weeks back hoping surely that would put them off but he never even missed a beat and continued with"ok sir,you know YOU may be entitled to compensation for missold......... I just slammed the phone down in disgust.:(:(0 -

I had one which I mistakenly answered in which the person babbled on about accident or ppi, (can't remember which now) I told them to P.O. and they said for me too! (they wouldn't take no for an answer)0 -

The TPS and MPS don't work (and are designed not to work) because if it did those lucrative revenue streams would dry up overnight.0 -
This guy took the parasites to small claims court and won
Billed them for £10 each time they called

He has a web site set up for cold callers. He says "There is no point in contacting The Information Commissioner, they do not take any action." no wonder these parasites continue to pester people when little is done
