                    Hi all,
Just a quick question for some of you, who I'm sure will be more knowledgeable than me!
I work 9-5. It's in my contract. I am required to do overtime in the form of out of hours support for one week in four, but I very very rarely get called on to do this (like, two or three times a year, and for only a few hours in the evening)
However, our company has just scored a large contract, which they require somebody to do some remote support for hong kong during their working hours. Which starts at our time, 2am, for eight hours.
This will only be for a couple of nights.
However, they are refusing to offer any money for working this shift, as it would be instead of working my 9-5. I have no idea how I'd manage the shift in time.
I obviously don't want to do this shift (as they are offering nothing).
Help?

PS I quite like my job, although my pay is probably already a little below industry average (I've not had a raise in nearly three years!)0

Doesn't that fall under out of hours support? This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

They are offering you nothing extra. You would not be doing it for nothing.
If you are worried about the time shift, look at what time you would have off before and after and think about how you could prepare.0

How do you work out that you will be working for nothing?
Make sure you get your daily rest between your day and night shifts which must be 11 hrs minimum.Be Alert..........Britain needs lerts.0

Thats not correct in most industry's , we do a morning and night shift once a week , it gives us a gap of only 8 hours between shifts..0

            Do none of you understand?
I did not apply for a job to do 2am shifts. I don't work in an industry where I am expected to do night shifts (it's an office job, supporting office hours). They did not check with me that it would be something I would or could do, before bidding for this contract.
I do not want to do night shifts. I've never done them before. I'm not a student, I have plenty of professional qualifications and earn a reasonable living.
The facts are, that my employer is demanding I work extremely unsociable hours, that I am not contracted to. And they are threatening to remove my annual bonuses if I do not. I have family responsibilities that would make this very hard on me, and they have not tried to negotiate in any way.0

Is your bonus part of your contract?
Was anyone else asked/told to do this shift?0

Bonus is part of my contract,
One other engineer (my junior), but he is on the same position as me, two young children, and he definitely doesn't want to do it!0
