The OP hasn't said that though. The OP has made no refernece to rest break of anything.

Does everything need to be spelt out to you? He has stated that he would work the "night" hours for a few nights instead of his normal hours. Anyone that has ever worked nights knows that, after your last night shift, the next day is your rest period.

    Common sense!
EVeryone bangs on about 'team' players well where is the team? A team is not just one person and you can not change the contract hours just like that with a threat.

They are not changing the contracted hours, they are asking him to swap his hours for a few days. He has stated that he and another team member have been asked to help, but he has the same dilemma as the OP. If other team members do not have the skills, clearly it would be pointless asking them.

If you worked in a shop and a colleague needed to swap their shift, just for a few days, would you do it? Would you consider it a change of contract, or helping out a colleague/ your employer?

Yeah well I have not worked nights and like the OP only had a 9-5 job

Swapping a shift in a shop is not the same thing and you know it. This is a change of contract surely. 9-5 is not the same as 1 days 9-5 and 3 days 2am to 10am

Good luck OP I guess everything here bar me says yeah just do it!

Why is it not the same thing? A change in hours is a change in hours, irrespective of the working environment.
  • The phrase to use is : 'family commitments' to avoid doing stupid hours at work

If you've got none.. Man up, do the silly hours and get over it. Heck, I've previously done 9-5 in the office, then started an 'on call' where I had to travel to a customer site at 7pm and work until 8am. What did I get in return? Lots of kudos

Unless he is a single parent, they're pretty family friendly hours - he's back in time to get them to school, and will be waking up just as they finish. ;)

    I didn't know school started after 10am

It's interesting when reading peoples past posts on here. It seems it's the same old people who put everyone down. Time after time after time.

    You're nothing more than bullies.

    You're nothing more than bullies.

You are more than free to post advice yourself, to counteract the bullies who are giving their opinion on a problem. Perhaps that's a better use of your time than trawling through past posts and having a go at everyone else.

OP - my line would be 'I have commitments in the evening hence why I have a 9-5 job. If you want to change my contract then you need to negotiate with me and make it worth my while. If you have a new contract then you are getting extra income and yet you don't want to share that with your workers. If you are forcing me to work outside of my hours then I shall have to take further advice on the subject'.
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

But if he does not do it he will lose his bonus, as he is showing himself to be inflexible and not a team player.

Sound like a good idea to you?

    Team player?

How is your employer, bidding for a package of work that only you can do, without asking you or taking your status into account, then forcing you to do night shifts (threatening to remove your bonuses which you've bent over backwards for eleven months to earn) which you aren't contracted to do, and ever even expected in your chosen career to do - being a 'team'?

A team involves everybody working at something. This is exploitation of a couple of members of staff to earn the company a fortune which they are not willing to offer any remuneration to the people who are actually expected to screw themselves over to carry out the work.

I don't know what type of unskilled labour you do miduck, but you're obviously lacking any self worth or responsibility whatsoever, if you think it's fine to just blindly do whatever your employer tells you without questioning it. But as long as you're happy trying to make yourself feel better by sitting on forums trying to bully people, that's all fine.

Thanks sambucus and misssarah, I have a meeting to go through details of this, this morning

Unless I have read this thread incorrectly, you still haven't exactly specified how many nights you need to be working over what period. You won't therefore be getting much useful advice.
:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.
