Rough painter decorator pricing

Currently about to move into a new house. All previous homes I have decorated myself. I know it is a 'how long is a piece of string question' but I have no idea what I am expecting to pay.

Based on a 3/4 bed semi with 2 reception rooms, if every room painted (no holes filling etc literally just painting), anyone have an idea how much I am looking at?

Is it done on a daily rate? I live in SW London/Surrey border. Or how much the average room costs to have painted (again no wallpaper stripping or prep)

Thanks

  • Can you not do it yourself or find a quality painter ?

why would you want a price from a rough painter :D

if it is just a case of painting all the walls then in some ways it doesnt seem cost effective to pay someone when you could do it yourself.

My renovation project has left every room in the house with every wall and ceiling having been plastered now needing painting, and every skirting board too. I have been quoted £750 to do the house with white skirting boards and magnolia walls paint to be supplied by us...I've no idea if this is a good price or not.Part of me thinks yes get it done and its finished, the money saver in me thinks I can carry on and do it myself and have the £750 to spend somewhere else....but one thing I have learnt during the renovation is get a price for the completion of the job rather than paying someone by the day.
frugal October...£41.82 of £40 food shopping spend for the 2 of us!

    2017 toiletries challenge 179 out 145 in ...£18.64 spend

With all the gloss work and mully if it took one bloke 2 weeks I bet you'd be looking at 1.5-2k in your area including paint? Painters in midlands on around 120 p/day.

It sounds very cheap. Allow £150 per day, one mist coat or primer and two top coats per surface. That is 5 days according to your quote. Could someone do your house in that time? And how do you know if they are any good? Personally I'd do it myself, and leave hard jobs such as plastering to the pros.

Decent decorators in your area charge £150-£200 per day. You will obviously find people willing to work for a fraction of that but you'll almost certainly compromise on the quality of the finish (unless you find a half decent painter who hasn't got any work on), depends what you're looking for really.... Quick and cheap or high end quality finish. If you want a cheap job you might as well do it yourself.

If I wanted a rough painter and decorator I would pay £3 per hr tops.

If I was a rough PD, and had kept it quite I would charge a Tenner.

If I wanted a decent painter I think £10 is fair, don't get me into what the trade charges, gets me in trouble.

I think you were beaten to it in post number 2. At least you didn't make a remark about the OP liking rough trade. Oops. And £10 an hour, what? Well, let's not go there.

  • Painting is all about the preparation,

Sounds like you've done the hard bit, but want to pay a painter for the glory bit.

Don't tackle it yourself if you have a budget allocated.

We just had our new home painted. It's a 3 storey 5 bed and we did hall, stairs, landings, 1 bedroom, kitchen, banister which was a big job for £660.

We did the lounge and sitting room ourself a long with our little ones room so it would be done before he could get here.

I was thrilled with the price and he did a stunning job. It did mean we had to remove wall paper in some rooms and sand the walls as prep is very important.

Well worth it, covers in matt very easily.

You are going to get so many different answers here from the sublime to the ridiculous. Your best bet is to get 2 / 3 peeps to trot along, discuss your jobspec with you in detail on site and then give you a price. What you have written above is open to interpretation so I could just as easily tell you it was £800 or £2,000 and be able to fully justify either.
