I was told the reason for afternoon deliveries was simple. Posties are (were) paid an additional rate for an early morning turn out - usually ready to process inbound mails at 0530am.

By switching this to 0730, it becomes a 'normal' day - no additional fees for any early starts. The result being the work gets done (but later) and the ending of the second delivery as well as Sunday collections was a must to make this work.

Now, with some deliveries finishing at 1700hrs, the pips are squeaking, and now other ways to save money are bring sought - it's not going to get any better.

true, although the 2nd delivery ended years ago,
RM had their hands tied for quite a few years, bearing in mind they MUST deliver to every household, or these days be seen to try!!
competition has taken over, but its still RM who has to sort it for the last leg bar a few elite locations.
the highly paid execs have to keep making changes to be seen to be doing something!
  • OH is a postie, and one reason for post coming late in the day is that when someone leaves a job or retires, their delivery route is divided up between other postmen, who are expected to do the extra work in their usual time  this has happened quite a lot recently in OH's office. He starts work at 7am, leaves the office at about 9am or later, after sorting all the mail, and what is supposed to be a four-hour delivery is very often 6-8 hours. Special deliveries need to be delivered by 1pm so he has to drive around all those first, then go back to the start and do the rest of the post - this takes at least an extra hour, or two sometimes. They share vans and so OH reckons he or the other postie sharing the van spends about an hour a day just standing around walking on the van coming back to pick him up. In the winter he is often still delivering in the dark!

It's the managers and people higher up that get paid big bonuses for "saving money" and unfortunately for the customers this tends to mean a pooer service!
