Asbestos internally in Garage

Hello

We think we have asbestos sheeting as the ceiling in an external garage , also as the ceiling in the attached external passageway

we live in a 60`s bungalow

The sheeting in the garage hasnt moved for years and years and years , but as we plan to use the garagre more and more , we were considering what options to take , my favourite is plasterboarding to the asbestos sheeting using the ultra sticky stuff you can get from screwfix etc....as the internal ceiling in the garage isnt in great condition , most of the boards are unbroken , but a couple have sections missing and the like

Then i was going to paint the external pasage way ceiling which is largly undamaged , with cheap gloss paint , just to keep it stable

I have also asked for a quote to remove it but i think this will not be affordable

Any thoughts guys , i can take pictures later and post up if that helps

Cheers
Dan

If it's unbroken, then there should be no issue. It's the fibres that are potentially hazardous, not whole sheets.

I suggest you paint with PVA adhesive first to seal it. This will also seal the edges of the broken sheets

All the sheets are pretty dusty though , so you look up and you cant help but think your breathing in asbestos :o

A proper asbestos sealer will stabilise the sheeting. It's [STRIKE]latex[/STRIKE] acrylic based and can be either sprayed or use an old brush or one which you can throw away. If it's dusty you should wear a disposable hooded overall as well as a proper particle mask.

That should be fine. When I used it I watered down the first coat to make it easier to apply and allow it to soak in a bit better. Then a second coat neat.

It will do exactly the same job as the more expensive asbestos sealers but at less than half the price.

Unless the sheets are actually coming apart then the dust will generally be bog standard household type dust. It is a good idea to wear disposable overalls and dustmask to work in any dusty environment

And these options can replace the need for plasterboaring out the garage , or shoudl i do that also for good measure?

It's your choice. If it is in decent enough condition and you are happy with how it looks then I would leave it. You just need to remember that if you do any work on it that it is possibly asbestos E.G. new light fittings etc
