Jaguar X type, good or bad?

My Dad has a 3.0 manual and has just spent £800 on a new clutch- he is not a happy bunny, as soon as he mentioned "something about a dual mass fly wheel" I tried not to groan down the phone.
He loves the car (drives a Nissan old fart every day) and keeps it for special but it costs him a fortune. I like driving it as well as it goes like a stabbed rat and he pays for petrol.0 -
Brother has a 2006 2.2 diesel estate.
I find the half leather seats horrible and the cabin is not spacious at all (I don't understand how it can be based on the Mondeo yet have so much less interior space!).
The engine blew one turbo at 100,000 miles and has also needed the EGR decoking manually a few times; this is despite mostly motorway and (knowing my brother) high speed.
As for toys, it has literally the s***est built in sat nav in the world which seems to completely lack any roads with less than two lanes in each direction.
Has all the usual Mondeo nonsense with siezing rear brake calipers combined with a crap handbrake.
We did the drop links and one of them (original Jaguar part) snapped when poked, but probably just a one-off.
Apart from all that, it drives well; just like the Mondeo it's based upon.
My personal verdict; if you want a Mondeo buy a Mondeo. You can't polish a turd.0 -

No they didnt do a 4x4 MK3 Mondeo. But a few people have fitted the X-Type 4x4 system to a Mondeo and it fits.
So you er... can't get a 4x4 Mondeo then can you? Unless of course you buy a mongrel or a Mk1 which will be a completely different car.
Point being the X-Type isn't just a Mondeo in a suit. In the same way Saabs were never Vectras dressed up. A lot of the bits are different so for Strider to suggest otherwise was incorrect. What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?0 -
I think they are based on the Mondeo estate platform. I know a guy who has one and he is really happy with it.0

That's always going to be an issue of perspective. It depends if you're buying it, selling it, telling the neighbours about it, or working on it.
Take the engine covers off an X-Type and a Mk3 Mondeo, or have them both up on a lift, and you will notice a fair few resembelances, but that's just one perspective.Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?

Indeed, however I also observed that there is a lot less space in the X-Type engine bay. It proved comparitively fiddly getting the starter motor off to do the very common starter gear solenoid shaft clean that's necessary on just about every Ford CDTi engine of the era on a regular basis.0 -
Love ours, 2008 Sport bought 5months ago from Sturgess in Leicester.
2.0Tdci, plenty of grunt, up to 62mpg we have had on a run, cheap tax and very comfortable.
The Mondeo Mk3 was not a turd, it's a very capable car in itself, and although 18% of the car is Mondeo, there is nothing that the driver sees, feels or uses that is Mondeo derived.
As for space, the car is a compact exec, bigger Jaguars are available.....0 -
I'd say it's more like 80%. I.e. the entire drivetrain, engine, suspension and brakes.
The differences are panels, cabin and lights.0
