Just (finally) ordered the Huawei G300
We are going to put Mrs B's Orange sim in it.
The sim is years old (small size) - will she need a new sim?
She is on the OVP/VM tarriff - does anyone know what the data rates are for this tarriff?

There were no data services when ovp was available.

I've seen people charged £10 a meg for it on ovp (the default cost when there's no data plan on the acc).

I wouldn't just put the sim in a go. I'd think you'd have to ditch it and get a new plan that has data included. Even if you switch 3g off (which sort of defeats the object of a smartphone) if you ever switch it back on at any point you'll get a huge bill !!

GPRS data is avail on OVP, just not 3G speed data, ie they will not issue 3G sims on OVP which will be a bit hard in next couple of years when 3G will replace 2G at some point when 2G is disbanded.

I used my Virgin OVP on £2.35 or £2.95 I think it was a MB, circa 2004/5 for sat nav on a pda.

    I'd forgotten all about OVP....

I was with Orange and took out a 12 month contract with O2, so switched the Orange Mobile Number onto OVP matching Virgin Mobile (it wasn't easy to transfer numbers from network to network in those days).

Anyway, I've just found the old Orange Sim, put it in an old phone and it still works.....

But does anyone remember what the Tariff would of been, something in the back of my head is telling me it was 'No Monthly Charge and 15p a min calls’, sure it was a cross between a PAYG and a Contract, costs same as PAYG but run like a Contract so no Top-Ups just charged for the calls & text (No free Mins or Text).

The tariff wouldn't "of" been, it *is* ;)

    No monthly charge
Orange to Orange or landline calls are 15ppm for the 1st x minutes per day, then 5ppm (?) IIRC
X-Net calls are expensive at around 30+ppm
Texts are 10p although Mrs B has a bundle of 100 texts for £3
    Billed monthly

I suggest that you make a short call just to keep it alive, although there has never been any suggestion of closing unused accounts.

Cross-network mobile calls are 35p/min on OVP Virgin
J B is right with other costs - 10p for texts,
landlines and orange mobiles: 15p for first 5 mins in any day, then 5p/min
(Non-geographic and other mobile minutes do not count towards the 5 mins)
    Voicemail is FREE

As a low non-data user who prefers a monthly bill, I stuck with OVP Virgin for many many years, but have now moved to The Phone Co-op, which although costs £2/month for absolutely nothing in terms of allowance, and can be beaten with value PAYG options, the 7p/minute charge with 1p minimum charge suits me better, and I remain on a monthly bill. Do miss free voicemail, but I can access that online.

I *think* that I'm going to swap the contract to a sim only 'dolphin 7'

£7 per month for 150 minutes, 250MB data and 500 texts

Unless anyone can find me anything better. (less texts and more data?)

We live 'out in the sticks' so won't be using much data as it's not available!! Will use wi-fi at home.

    I'm on OVP

Ordered a San Francisco 20 months ago direct from Orange when my faithful 2G Nokia keys started to stick.

As the Nokia 2G sim did not have 3G capability Orange just sent me an 3G SIM card with the new phone and advised the £5 month 500MB bolt on which I accepted all on OVP monthly terms

    No problem.
