Let me assume a completely NON-neutral position. :-X
As Lincslad so rightly stated:It goes a whole lot deeper than "it changes a lot of your settings" - ask those whose PC won't boot, or will not connect to the Internet, or will not download email, or will not allow them to visit certain websites or run certain programs.
In my case, spot-on re all of the above. I had to uninstall the blasted thing and then use System Restore to get back to normality as my computer was still reeling from the effects.
What's more, I'm getting auto update popping up all the time telling me 'updates are ready to install, please click to install them', and when I do I find it's the 'monster'. I would'nt touch SP2 with a bargepole. >:(
Wellll, I might consider it when SP3 comes out, by which time they might have sorted out all the glitches in SP2.'Puritanism: the haunting fear that someone, somewhere, may be happy'.

A funny thought - MS Service packs with even numbers tend to be flakey...
Service pack 4 and 6 for NT were absolutely terrible. It was impossible to back out SP4 and have the system perform as well as it was before it was "upgraded".
Instead of making SP7 for NT they created 6a (so that doesn't count)
It could be that SP4 for Windows XP will also be c**p
Just a thought ......... ;D0 -
Many of the problems I have heard about seem to be related to the firewall.
If you have a firewall already then make sure you switch the one off in SP2 straight after install.
If you don't have one already then you are crazy! At least SP2 will install one for you.
I applied the patch yesterday without incident and everything seems to be working ok.0 -

You can turn auto-update off. Just go into Control Panel and open it there and select the Turn Off Atuomatic Updates button.0 -
I think that I won't bother installing SP2! I'll just not chance getting my computer wrecked. And after all there is nothing work with my computer. I have firewall and antivirus and it hasn't crashed on me for the last year anyway....0

I'd still recommend caution, if you are up to date with autoupdates it might not be the thing for you. Oldest daughter learned the lesson of not backing up important files first. 2 years of open university work and photo's of children gone when SP2 gave the blue screen of death. As SP1 did the same to me I think I'll give it a miss for now.I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.0
