  • Thanks for all replies. It is replacing an old baxi boiiler not a combi so it is not a straight swap. The engineer actually did come around to give me a quote.

But again celtic girlie, have you examined why you think you need a combi? There is much to be said for stored hot water and high efficiency conventional boilers. Think carefully before you make the final decision.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..
  • I am having one, combi valiant, magnaclean, new thermostats and a fair bit of pipe work, and its coming in at £2500. It was the best quote I could get locally.
Doesn't it vary around the country? I know Id have paid less in Birmingham but the south west does seem dearer for just about everything so expect labour charges will be higher too.

yet another trade bashing post from you, most RGI's won't give a price over the phone not because they are greedy at all it's because they need to see the job & find out what work needs to be done, there is no such thing as an average price every job is different, being self employed is totally different to payee if you go to work & sit there & do nothing you may get moaned at by your boss but you still get paid, if you do an estimate or a quote you may get 50% of them turn into a job,
    .

Yes every job is different thats why i say average. you could also ask the hourly rate however. Many trade peeps price on the job depending on the effort involved.

i am self employed, so i know there are overheads.

However there is a big difference between 18 pound per hour,45 pound per hour and pricing per job.

if you are charging over 30 pound per hour and your pleading poverty/overheads are killing you then you are doing something wrong.

And ill keep bashing the trades when they are charging over 30 pound per hour. There are many charging stupid hourly rates. There are also many on here in the trade that attemp to defend those rates.

I have seen good prices on here for jobs, and some trade members slate the quote just cause its cheap. There are handful of keen priced qualified members on here. That will give an average/guesstimate of a job. Many of the rest seem to stick together like the masons lol

As for the 50% of quotes, There is a reason you are not getting the job.

Sorry if i have offended or you see me as trade bashing. But bashing were bashing is due lol

  • Mababejive I have no idea about the difference in boilers - I just know that this is what everyone else I know has. One benefit of the combi is getting rid of the hot water tank to free up some space as I do not have a big house

You see i knew you were going to say that !

Its what women say and what heating chaps say to get them to buy combis !

May i say that you shouldnt make such a crucial judgement based on your criteria.
May i also say that you should retain your hot water cylinder unless its leaking/finished and fit one of these or similar instead..
