  • Our communication is on & off. I know my mother has mentioned the problem to at least 2 Doctors, so they would be aware too. & she was told unless I go myself, they cant offer me any help.
  • Have phoned to make an appointment a few times but theres always a fortnight wait, so ive ended up leaving it. This, along with whats wrong is also the problem.

As an observer it seems you are putting everything off... something I am all too familiar with... in fact what you describe is familiar to me.. living with parents but not speaking (in my past), struggling to take decision and not being able to go out for long periods, inaction. The problem is you really really need to get an ESA application made... and you really really need to get GP appointment. You are stalling and this will likely lead to ever increasing financial and admin issues. Making an application for ESA is very easy (the tricky bit tends to come when you face proper assessment after around 3 months on the benefit).. do it by phone if possible. Tell them you want to backdate the claim and are going to try to get backdated sicknote (although as above I suspect you may struggle). Ultimately it'll be probably the dating of sicknotes that'll determine what backdating, if any, you get... and if you don't see your GP you'll get no sicknotes or any payments... it is that simple. You'll get lots of ESA advice throughout claiming on here... but you need to start things now.

My daughter has ASD and when I took her to her GP to get a medical certificate for ESA the GP couldn't backdate it to the start of my daughter's claim as my daughter had not asked for a sick note in the past 6 months. So it now looks like my daughter will lose the benefit from the start of her claim (end of august) as we had to wait so long for an appointment to see the GP.

It is ridiculous as ASD isn't an illness that will go away with antibiotics. It's a life long disability.

Even worse is the fact that there was no reason for my daughter to ask for a sick note before now as she was still at school until July.

So, the chances are you won't get a back dated sick note from your GP.

Bottom line.... no sick note, no ESA money.

    My advice,
before making a claim .... see your Dr and get a sick note, ask for backdated one but the Dr will not give you one if this is the first time they have seen you for this condition, it is illegal for the Dr to backdate the sicknote if they have not seen you. So by all means ask, but do not expect to get it.

When you have your sicknote you will know what date it starts from so phone up and make the claim. You can backdate the claim 7 days before the start of your sicknote (this is called self certification) you don't need anything to self certify for those 7 days.

There's simply no point in claiming until you have seen your doctor.

It does not however have to be your gp.
It can be any doctor who's seen you.
  • Thanks again to all for the replies.

Yeah, I have made things worse for myself by not being seen sooner, but, thats easier said than done when I feel the way I feel. Ive become so indecisive about everything, that nothing gets done.

It looks like I will have lost out on about 2 months money then if theres no chance of backdating things.

I'll call the surgery at 8 am & see if theres an appointment available as soon as.

How long does the claim take over the phone & is there owt to worry about?

Nothing to worry about.. the initial application is about getting standard information so key is having that available... might be handy to have paperwork at hand relating to things like GP name/address. It might take a while on the phone (it's an 0800 number so typically would be free..check) but at least you know it'll be done and dusted.. no missing post. This is the form.. so expect information regarding what is on this form to be asked about if relevant. http://webarchive.nationalarchives.gov.uk/20121015000000/http://www.dwp.gov.uk/docs/esa1-print.pdf

The issue you have is over what date to apply from.. and as above that is something hard to answer right now... and why urgent appointment is necessary.. unless as above... you've a specialist who could provide sicknotes retrospectively.

  • Well I couldnt make the call this morning & I know nothing will change until I do. Can't bear the thought of going, but I know I must.
  • make time. you know you have to get this sorted, the doctors not going to telepathicly know your in need and call you. you have to make that step.

i could make excuses all day long not to go out or contact people, ahh i couldnt call the doctor today, my cat had to use his litter tray and he spilled it on the floor and it took me 8 hours to clean it up, or i couldnt call my doctors today because i had a phone call off a friend to say she had a new puppy she was going to show me and came round an hour later during that hour i had to clean the house and she was here all day, i can make excuses all day long lame as they are they are a excuse in my mind thats not going to get me anywhere, because the fact remains nothing will get done unless you decide enough is enough and start the ball rolling.

i know this is a harsh post, and believe me i am in your situation with not wanting to interact, im awake most nights and get very little sleep in the day, i havent picked my car keys up or interacted with anyone for days now and its off and on and has been for many many years, but i had to make a decision do i see a CPN or do it continue to put pressure on my wife and kids and parents, NO i made the decision to see my CPN, and now theres hope how did i get a cpn? by seeing my doctor!. so c'mon pick yourself up and that phone at 8:30 AM and do it right and get er done!.
