It was a nice and quick one, perfect for a rookie like me! Just got to do the report tonight, and am also struggling with the expenses claim.

I've done 2 reports today and now have 3 lined up for Monday, 2 shop related and one lunch then I think it will ease off abit. Just glad I bought a new laser printer with built in scanner, makes life much easier for me. Altogether I think I have about 10 to action until mid-Sept but they are spaced evenly.

Depends on who you work for. Some companies are PAYE and will deduct the tax and NI for you.
Many companies consider you as self-employed contractors. You will need to register with the Inland Revenue as self-employed (regardless of how few jobs you may do). Fail to do this and they will fine you. Then, each April they will send you a Self Assessment Tax Return which you will need to fill in to calculate any tax you owe. When you register as self-employed, ask about NI contributions. They will tell you whether or not you need to pay anything extra, make voluntary contributions to protect any future benefits, or apply for a small earnings exemption.0 -
