Could part of the reason that we have MANY single parents be that benefits are too generous?

How many single parents actually aim to be single parents.

Many are not very careful in avoiding it as the consequences can be quite a comfortable lifestyle.

    If life was as simple....

If whilst you've been on benefits the cooker has packed up followed by the vacuum, TV and washing machine then either you've been really unlucky or spent too long on benefits.

Attitudes are hardening. There's no way an argument that people on benefits don't have sufficient money because it's difficult to budget for the unexpected is going to be treated sympathetically.

Getting a job for some might not simple but sometimes the obvious stares us in the face.

So there is a job for every unemployed person waiting for them then, they only have to apply do they?

Guess it all depends on what you think state benefits should be for.
I believe that with certain exceptions they should be to get one through a temporary situation whilst keeping fed and housed. If you believe they should pay for a lifestyle that includes smoking, alcohol and gambling then I disagree.

Yes but you are wanting something that can't be delivered. Saving a fiver or tenner a week is hardly a way of life. You can't provide benefits on an individual basis, a large male gets the same amount of money as a small female. Yet the male needs more food than the female. So the female should buy more expensive food just so she has nothing left? Or should she save the £5 a week, maybe buy business clothes. Surely it is better they did that then rely on crisis loans etc.

Your thinking is what is wrong with many companies, the idea that if you don't use all your budget it should be cut the following year leading to people 'wasting' money to keep their budget high.

    Yes this is very true.

I used to work in a job that gave us an expense allowance and if it was not all spent one year it would be reduced the next.

So surprise, surprise, it was always fully spent by everyone each year.

The problem lies with the benefit system itself, not whether someone has £1 left to buy a lottery ticket.

They may have gone without a meal to buy it for all you know or saved up 10p per week.

All very well if that was the case, but lets face it... its not.

The problem is that those temporary situations are no longer temporary for many not by personal choice.
