Many cruise ships use NY as an embarkation port for the Bahamas. Sounds good to me, hectic shopping and a relaxing week! DIY and suggest use American TA like www.americandiscountcruises.com for a cheaper deal.

    Hi

We booked the Waldorf Astoria In NY and a Disney Hotel in Orlando. We got both at really good prices by closely watching the prices and booking when I felt they had reached their lowest point. We went in August for 3 weeks (4 night in NYC, 3 nights in DC and a fortnight in Florida) with two kids in tow.

    Hi All

Next year we'd like to do a two centre holiday, with one destination being New York.

Can anyone advise where the best place would be to start planning such a trip? Does it need to be done via an agent by phone, or can we do it ourselves online?

And where would you recommend that the second destination might be?

    Thanks in advance .

4 years ago with our 14 yr old daughter we spent a few days in New York then flew down to Myrtle Beach for a week. We picked up a car at the airport and after our week at the beach drove to Charleston for a few days, then on to Charlotte in North Carolina. I arranged the flights, hotels and the self catering at the beach by booking on line. Often the accommodation is not payable until you arrive. You might want to book a flight and hotel package together though for the extra insurance cover.
Earlier this year we put together a flexi package through Thomas Cook as we did New Orleans, cruise, then Memphis. that gave us the extra insurance as it was a package.

The New York and Carolinas package gave us the city, the beach and the old south, something for all of us. The cruise with the 2 cities gave us the chance to relax, sunbathe and visit the music cities. I would look at what you and anyone else who is going with you would like to do and see if you can fit it all in

How long have you got in total?

My choices at the moment would be:

NYC/Niagara (train to Niagara and then a Niagara on the Lake wine tour and stay at a B&B)
NYC/Niagara /Toronto(train to Niagara and then train to Toronto)
    NYC/Cruise - my fave choice!

Probably a couple of weeks LondonDiva.

    Oceancreek that sounds fabulous.

I know the teens would like NY at some point for the shopping, but I"m happy to go anywhere in USA really! OH likes Florida and would like to go back there.

Keep checking the usuals (last minute, expedia, skyscanner etc.) and you'll soon get to know ballpark figures for things. Then when a good price comes along you will know to book it.

I've been searching for next year and prices to NYC/Boston have been approx £3.5k and then suddenly they dropped for a few days to £1.5k - so bagged them then! I travel from Newcastle so I can never find direct flights, but I don't mind an Amsterdam, Paris or London change.

All being well I hope to do Boston, Niagra, Cape Cod, NYC this time - pretty much what Londondiva is suggesting.

I always book my own stuff online. Friend of mine wanted a multi stop in USA recently and was about to pay over £1500 more through a travel agent than what she eventually paid on the same flights by booking online.

Half the fun is in the planning.

We would have to go July or Aug next year due to college and uni holiday terms.

One other option we have is to go somewhere in the summer for a week and then go to NY between Boxing Day and New Year. Undecided which way to go to be honest. Might be better going for 2 weeks in July or Aug?

    Sal

NYC can be unbearable in the height of the summer! very hot, especially on subways etc. Many New Yorkers try to escape the city in the summer! I have been to NYC many times in both summer and winter, and personally recommend going at winter. It is magical at Xmas time :)

As for twin centres, these would be my recommendations:

    NYC and Toronto/Niagara
    NYC and Montreal
    NYC and Boston
    NYC and Washington DC

    Hi Geordie

That sounds interesting as OH wanted to go to Florida but rest of us want to go to NY. Did you stay in hotels?

That's what I'd go for. I visited New York in early Autumn but I imagine it would be spectacular for Christmas and New Year - probably pretty pricey though.
  • I have never been to NY after Christmas.....but have been several times just before....and yeah - that is a brilliant time to see the city. It really shines. Most times we have had beautiful sunny crisp winter days....great for getting out walking about exploring.

My dd did NY and Miami this year with Virgin. She got a good price and two really good hotels, the one in Miami was an art deco on South Beach.
