Plusnet mystery

hi all!

I have my broadband with Plusnet since July. I'm away a lot, sometimes for two or three month in a row.
I started with the cheapest plan of 10GB only. After about four days of joining I received an email saying I was about to be over my allowance. I couldn't understand how this happened so soon.

(I was with 02 for two years, with 20GB allowance, and at that time I was home all the time, downloading a lot without any problems. I only gave it up 'cos the internet was painfully slow.)

So I had to upgrade Plusnet to 60GB, which I thought it would be more than enough. This month I've been home for a week only and already used 36GB. Also the readings show usage of about 230 kb for every day I was away and no one was here. Do we need to pay some kind of standing charge or what?

Can anyone recommend a provider that is not expensive and is not capped. I know Plusnet doesn't count the overnight use, who is going to wait until midnight to do stuff..I'm really short of money otherwise would go with BT.
Any advice very welcome.
Thank you

Remember your allowance is for up and downloads. If you have had to go to 60gb then you are doing more than you did with O2, probably because you now have a faster speed.

Also when you go away you should turn your router off, as there are many services and hackers attempting access to your router, and all data sent to it, and its replies are counted, even when your computer is not on, that is where your 230kb daily figure you quoted comes from.

Many users do their downloads after midnight !

So that you can save your money - perhaps you need to re-appraise how you use the internet.

What on earth have you been doing to use 36gb in a week? You must have know how much you are going to use if you took the 10gb a month service.
The very small usage when away is normal with any service.
There is no "service" charge, only the monthly change for the broadband

To use 36GB in a week you must be d/loading a LOT of TV on i-player or equivalent or d/loading or watching a lot of video; for example, streaming from YouTube???
If you aren't then I suspect that your router has been hacked and someone is using your d/load allowance;presume you have got encryption enabled on your wireless router??

As above, is your wireless network secured by WPA or stronger, and if so has someone obtained or hacked your password?
The first thing to do is to change your password and then monitor usage using any of the free software available.

  • I'm suspicious something is wrong with the router. The key password that comes in the router, is the one I used. I don't know how to change it or any other security measure.

Can anyone help with step-by-step advice on how to make it safer from hackers, please.

    Thank you, guys 😊

Log into the router interface via your browser, go to the wireless section and change the password.

    Hi anatta,

Sorry to hear about this, if you could post up a ticket ID from your account I'd be happy to take a look at things for you and see if there is anything that could be done regarding the usage?

    Regards,

Log in to the Plusnet site with the dtails they gave you when you signed up. Go to "Help and Support." Ask a Question, or check in at the Forums.

Am about to change to Plusnet myself (30/10/12) and am already impressed with the Support, by phone and website. Phone support is good, all English voices, patient and undestanding.
I think this job really needs
    a much bigger hammer.
