Generally, short checking bags is frowned upon. They could make you pay the difference in fare, or put a note on your Frequent Flyer record in case you do it a lot. Personally, I'd fly the VCE leg and book a flight home from there. (Or make up some excuse as to why you need your checked bags in Rome...)

  • £158pp is still a great price!, however I would be reluctant to pay so much for trains when you can get the megabus.

I see what you're saying, but the last thing I want to be doing when I'm about to embark on a 3 flight trip in either direction is get a coach to london and then out to heathrow (nearly the same cost as I'm paying on the train) or one back from Birmingham.

In my opinion, I've saved so much doing it this way that 'treating' myself to a train journey is a good trade off.

Surprisingly few people on this thread. I didn't book anything as I find Americans annoying plus I don't actually have a spare slot to fill where I am not already travelling.

As I mentioned in my post, nice deal if you can be bothered with it.

Personally I would imagine that many would take my view that if you can afford to go on a holiday to the USA or otherwise you can afford to spend a couple of hundred quid extra on flights which will mean you don't have to do a tour of European airports on the way there and back. For me, a day extra not travelling is worth more than the saving.

Actually, I don't agree. At those kind of prices it is worth it even for a 'whistlestop' tour.
I've gone to a fair amount of places that I would not have bothered to see because of a cheap flight.
I would have gone to the USA with one of the cheap flights if I had a free slot.
That way, if they had annoyed me, I would not feel that bad, as I would have spent a minimal amount. :)

For the return leg I am supposed to be flying from JFK (New York) to Venice (Via Rome) however I intend just to fly from JFK to Rome and skip the Rome to Venice flight.

At JFK will I have any problems checking in my bag just until Rome?

Just say you need to get medication from your bag in Rome - it shouldn't be a problem.

I'm not taking the return flight at all. ;)

A single award ticket from LHR to LAS would be approx £400 plus 50,000 BA miles.

Instead I am flying LHR to GVA (£15 plus 4,500 miles), staying at the Intercontinental on a BRG freebie, and then GVA to JFK for £30. I'll fly from there to LAS for £1 plus 25,000 miles (AA business class). So I am saving £355 plus 30,500 airmiles, which would cost several hundred pounds more, plus I get to spend a full day in beautiful Geneva.

If that is not worth it, then I suggest that you stay at home!

    Full response:

    Dear Alitalia fans,

Thank you for the interest you took in our Facebook Global Offer. Alitalia was the first airline to create a global event of this kind for the Internet community: the most wide-ranging Alitalia promotion ever.

We offered a worldwide 25% discount, with the exception of Japan, where for technical reasons we were forced to create a unique E-Coupon worth 25.000 yen (approximately 250 euro) to be used exclusively for the purchase of flights from Tokyo or Osaka. This redemption rules were clearly stated in the Japanese version of the Facebook offer.

Unfortunately, due to a malfunction, the system did not recognize the limitation of this unique e-coupon to be used only on routes from Japan. As a result, the system erroneously allowed the voucher discount of 25,000 yen to be used on all routes in Alitalia’s global network.

The news spread rapidly online and in a matter of a few hours our Japanese website reported a dramatic surge in visits and purchase requests from several geographical areas.

This unusual occurrence on the Japanese website triggered a security system alert which, considering the high percentage of number of requests at zero cost, froze all transactions. The promotion’s objective was to spur and increase the sale of tickets at a discounted price, and not to issue tickets for free or at a minimal cost.

However, since Alitalia intends to protect clients who have committed a, albeit minimal, amount with their credit card, we confirm the validity of the transactions requested on the Japanese site with a value greater than 1 euro cent. Those clients will soon receive an e-mail with their ticket.

Finally, in consideration of the great success of the promotion, we decided to extend the 25% discount offer for two additional days.

    :D

Argh I'm really annoyed now! I gave up messing with the dates and ended up getting a flight that was about £10 less than the cost of the voucher which then got cancelled, thinking they'd all get cancelled anyway. If I just kept trying a tiny bit longer I could now have a dirt cheap flight to the US!
  • Think I'll just fly to NYC and back with hand luggage as im intending to miss the Venice to Rome flight from JFK and I may have no other option of checking my bags to Venice.

Intend on packing just my laptop, a few shirts and boxers. Will use the local launderettes in NYC to get my clothes changed. Don't itend to buy anything in NYC either :-)
