    There's no reason not to!

The point about all this is that your new one isn't valid until the first of the month, so till then you need the "old" one on as well.
  • I just go out at midnight and change them. I slap the new disc onto the screen first before taking the old one off. Just to be double sure I don't get done for not displaying a tax disc. :D

URL is https://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/HowToTaxYourVehicle/DG_10021514 but they have redone the gov.uk site and this can now only be found via Google cache

Surely as this is only now available in google cache and not on a government website then it is out of date.

Also, there is no start date on a tax disc, only the expiry date is shown.

No, They have completely revamped the gov.uk site and currently the searches on Google still point to the direct.gov URLs. I am assuming that the new gov.uk site is still a work in progress and Google has still to fully index it.

I'm in the "put it on the car as soon as I get the new one" camp. I've had no grief from plod or his minions for this over the last 40 years or so.

Only on reading this post was I aware that this is a potential problem, after all I am only renewing the tax disk, which only has an expiry date on it!

Technically, displaying both may count as driving with an obstructed view of the road. There's an exemption for the "obstructions within the swept area" rule for official documents such as tax disks, but untill the start of the month the new one is just a piece of paper so wouldn't qualify.

That said, it would have to be a seriously anal traffic warden or policeman who decided to act on it!

As for direct.gov, don't forget that they're trying to explain things to people who'd get lost with the full explantion even with a guide-book, sat-nav and Official Tour Guide to help them :rotfl:

    Lol :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

They do have dates of issue, but more to the point they are either 6 or 12 month discs with an expiry date, which logically means they are not valid until 6 or 12 months before the expiry date.

So we could buy a disc now for expiry April 30 2013 it may appear to be valid now during the month of October 2012 to the casual passerby (as most people use 12 month discs) but only upon closer inspection will the passerby see the number '6' meaning it is currently not valid.

It is only a potential problem, and may be unlikely to get you a fine, but if a fine was issued you would have no defence. And the OP is asking for the correct advice according to the law on what is actually the case not what will "probably be ok".

Tax disc enforcement is done several ways..

A police officer looks at the tax disc and sees it's out of date. If it's in date, he/she will not care if it was displayed a few days too early.

A DVLA camera/ANPR system reads your number plate whilst the car is being driven on a road. The computer compares it with its database and finds that the car has a valid tax disc. End of story. It has no idea which tax disc and doesn't care.

You don't renew your tax disc and the DVLA start hounding you.

No-one is going to worry, in the slightest, that you displayed your tax disc early. Enforcement is all about dealing with those who don't pay the tax.

No one is arguing about that. The OP wanted clarification of the rules which I think Wig has eloquently explained.
