Tesco Mobile -Seething!

Blackberry contract finished so decided to take up what looked like a very good offer from Tesco Mobile.

Samsung Chat with good amount of minutes text and calls and data all for £7.50pm. Advertised as - acccess your e-mails via your phone.

As I am have an old freeserve e-mail address I rang tesco to check this would be compatable. No problem said the nice salesman and he proceeded to put through my order.

Phone arrived and I spent all last night transferring contacts and diary entries over and transferred my old number by using the PAC Number given by Vodaphone. Was really happy until I started to set up my e-mail account.

As confused by only 6 options, none being Freeserve/Orange, I rang Tesco.

No - not compatable. Sorry! sales people always say it is even when not.

The very nice and helpful man has agreed to cancel the new 24 month contract and allow me to put SIM into my old phone as a PAYG and promises my first months £7.50 will be refunded once phone returned to them. I can ring tomorrow to get another PAC number to give to Vodaphone when I have to go back to them.

I feel I have been conned. I now have all the inconvenience of having to go back to Vodaphone and going back to them and have actually lost £20 of my Vodaphone contract as I ordered the new Tesco one whilst still seeing out my months notice with Vodaphone. Did this as I wanted to get it all sorted as very busy and chaotic few weeks about to start.

Just wanted to warn anyone else considering moving to a new provider. Do not trust the sales pitch !!!!! I thought I had been so thorough and so careful.

Am I missing something, what exactly is a freeserve email address? Is it simply an ISP provided email address? If it is then I can't understand why it would be incompatible as the Samsung Chat 335 does support emails. How do you normally access your emails?

You normally just select 'other' but you then have to enter all the settings manually !.
  • I've had a quick look at the help section of Vodafone and the possibilities seem to be AOL, Googlemail or "Other".

I strongly suspect you could enter the parameters for Freeserve there.

This will get you incoming mail. The remaining problem is more tricky. Sending e-mails.

Giffgaff users have the same problem and the send and receive settings are here:-

Thanks all of you for your replies.
Sorry if I have not made myself very clear. I am not the most technicaly minded individual.
I have an e-mail address which is provided by Orange as the ISP. I access e-mails on my laptop but also have for the past 2 years accessed them on my Blackberry mobile.
The Samsung does only give a few options and when I rang their technical helpline, I was told that they had checked my e-mail address and that it would not be possible to set it up as an account on the Samsung.

I'm just careful - interseting what you say. As a non techie I think I would struggle to enter the right stuff but I also know people who can receive but not send e-mails on their Samsung phones. seems the likely reason.

Even more miffed now as Tesco Mobile have converted the SIM to PAYG and i have put this in my Blackberry. I now need a MEP Network code to unlock it. Vodaphone say this will take 5 days. I am cut off from the world

it would support pop3, which is what orange is
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

You can unlock the Blackberry yourself now for 99p via eBay or within 24hrs here for free.
If you don't make many calls etc, why not stick with PAYG.

To maintain your Blackberry on T-Mobile will only cost between £2.50 and £3.33 per month.
Then you can be assured access to your old email as before.

    Look here and here...

    Which model number the Blackberry?

It will work on your Chat, you just need to set it up.

There is even a work-a-round if you get stuck, set yourself up a GMail account. Everything works with GMail.

You can configure the GMail account to pick up the mail from your existing address, and then tell the phone to use the GMail account.
  • If you want to try to get the Chat to work I think it would be possible to work you through it.

When you have "other" e-mail accounts what is the first setting it asks for ?

    Blackberry 8520

This sounds a very interesting idea. I will look into it a bit more. Thank you.

I use my phone very little to make calls. perhaps an average of 10 to 15 mins a month. I do use it though to text, probably an average of 200 a month. Would PAYG sound like a viable option for me? I get so confused with all the options

I seem to be already past that option I think as my SIM has been altred to PAYG and the Samsung Chat phone has been registered as going back to them.
