Er.. I think it might depend on the area, tbh. I remember ringing the Police when I was living in a not-so-good area in Manchester when I heard someone's burglar alarm going off.. they didn't want to know.

I agree, think you got lucky there. I once phoned the police (non-emergency number) to report an alarm going off in the middle of the night and they told me they couldn't come out unless I had seen something suspicious going on. I thought the alarm was evidence of that!
  • Surely if it 'could be' a burglar alarm and you may of heard banging noises... The police may well turn up!

    Hi all

    I finally have silence :)

All sorted neighbours dad luckily had a key.

My neighbour has gone on holiday for 10 days when she left she hadn't set her alarm properly and the beeping was it's way of saying it hadn't set.

Turns out also her phone has been lost while on holiday so when my other neighbour text'd her she wouldn't have got it.

Anyway the dad is really pleased and the mum knocked to thank me so all good

Glad you got it sorted but this was inteesting reading, especially the person who said noise people wouldn't do anything. A few years ago my alarm started going off for no reason during the day when I was at work and a neighbour called the noise abatement people after 3 hours. They turned up knocking on my door and another neighbour told them I usually got home after picking my kids up from school so they waited for me. Luckily I dd go straight home with the kids as they told me that if I hadn't arrived within half an hour they would've broken into my house to disconnect the alarm and would have billed me for the privilege.
I was served an official disturbance letter, had to get my alarm disconnected and a letter sent to police confirming I'd done it

I know it's over know but buy yourself some WAX ear plugs, they are super comfortable and block out loads of noise when installed properly.

We don't have a burglar alarm because we were worried that it would be a nuisance. We got CCTV instead but while there's a discount on insurance for an alarm there's nothing for CCTV. Actually got someone snooping around looking for metal I guess but police not interested unless crime has been committed.

managed to find the source of the beeping. Turned out it was an old smoke alarm in someone's shed at the bottom of the garden. They weren't away so I have no idea why they didn't notice it and stop it.
Several of my family have a hearing loss: I do myself, but in my case I'm hyper-sensitive to bleeps and high-pitched whistling sounds which other people don't actually seem to hear.

I digress: Mum can't hear her smoke alarms, or her CO2 alarm - she has some vibrating / flashing alarms fitted but still has at least one old smoke alarm. Other people may tell her there is something beeping, but they either can't or don't work out which one it is: she waits for me to visit. As soon as I'm in through the door, I'm like a tracker dog, hunting down the offending noise so that I can sort it out!!!

So it's possible that they either couldn't hear it, or didn't realise it was coming from their shed.

  • I once was tortured with a beeping noise from a neighbour's house when she went on holiday. It turned out to be the beep from her answering machine! It was so loud I almost went out of my mind.

Try their Dad and if he doesn't have keys, get a message to them any way you can, they probably know what the sound is.

    Good luck.

OMG! I know how that feels, my "not very nice neighbour" went away last Friday and since then his answering machine (which must be positioned right next to our partitioning lounge walls) has been beeping every 5-10 seconds for the past week, its driving me mad, I know its definately his answering machine as when his phone rings (yes it too sounds like it is in my house its that loud) his answering machine must cut in, then this god awful annoying beeping begins.

Don't even know when he is back and even when he does come back there is no way we can approach him to ask him to turn the beep/volume down as he is not a nice person and doesn't give 2 hoots about his neighbours, so there fore unapproachable.

For the record, all burglar alarms are supposed to be set up on the basis that they automatically switch off after 20 minutes and should be on an annual contract by a recognised industry installer. If they are not your insurance company will not recognise them as a preventative measure and give you a discount on your insurance premium. If your neigh our has claimed to have such an alarm with their insurance company their policy could well be invalidated.

Why not use this as a good reason to get up a Neighbourhood Watch scheme in your road. We have one and every member has their own neighbour who acts a keyholder for them The street NHW Coordinator keeps a list of all keyholder contacts so that if anybody's burglar alarm goes off, somebody knows who the keyholder is. Works for us, but you have to live in a street where people are prepared to keep an eye out for each other.
