Alarm going off in neighbours house for 28 hours!

Hi All
I need some advice my neighbour is apparently away at the moment and since 4am yesterday morning there has been a constant beeping coming from her house.
I checked straight away that it wasn't her burgler alarm or fire alarm and everything seemed ok. I don't know what it is going off but the noise is constant and it's driving me insane!!
My neighbour the other side has her number and said she would contact her to get it sorted this was yesterday morning.
Got home last night and it was STILL going off! Cue a second night with no sleep.
I found out this morning where her dad lives. Is acceptable for me to knock and see if he can get in and sort it?
I am a) worried as to what this noise is and b) I can't go another night without sleep.
Also what can be done if the dad can't get in. Can I ring the police or the noise disturbance team at the council?
Sorry for all the questions but I'm so tired I can't think straight

I have just had a few days away with my husband. Within hours of our arrival and getting the stuff out of the car i noticed i'd got a missed call on my mobi (obviously hadnt heard it whilst in the caravan). It was my friend and neighbour. Our son had gone out and not set the alarm properly and it was going off.
My husband had missed calls from both our neighbours reporting the same thing.
Obviously if you cant get hold of your neighbour i'd pop round and see her Dad before you get anyone else involved. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Hi,
Similar situation happened to me. I used to live in a flat and the man who lived directly above me went on holiday for a couple of weeks.
His house alarm went off (the 2nd day he was away) and the noise was awful! I contacted the police (non-emergency number) and they said neither they nor the fire service could do anything unless there was an actual emergency!
Fortunately I happened to know his daughter attended a local school along the road so I got in touch with the school secretary and explained the situation. I said that I understood she could not give me any of his personal details but that I would be most grateful if she would contact him on his mobile on my behalf. Thankfully she did and he got his dad (who had spare keys) to go around and reset it. He was most apologetic when he returned!
I personally would get in touch with the Dad."Isn't it enough to see that a garden is beautiful without having to believe that there are fairies at the bottom of it too?" (Douglas Adams)0 -
Very unlikely the police will do anything unless there is a real reason to beleive that someone is lying hurt in the property and the council noise team will simply suggest noise monitoring and issue an enforcement notice once noise nuisance has been proved over a period - they certainly won't break in to shut it off in the near future.
Best option is the Dad but if he can't get in then your best bet is ear plugs - although you will adapt to it and tune it out pretty soon anyway. Having spent a few nights on holiday next to a main rail line in an old carriage with next to no sound insulation, its amazing how quickly your body adapts and sleeps through it.Adventure before Dementia!0 -
Thanks guys for all your advice.
I had a feeling police ect would be a lost cause but I'm grasping at straws here lol.
I'll knock on the dads door tonight and see if he can help.
I'm not a great sleeper anyway so feel like a zombie atmFirst Date 08/11/2008, Moved In Together 01/06/2009, Engaged 01/01/10, Wedding Day 27/04/2013, Baby Moshie due 29/06/2019 :T0 -
This would drive me absolutely insane. I think your first action is to try to get hold of dad. Failing that do ring the noise abatement department of your council. They'll be able to advise. There used to be a telly programme about a various noise abatement departments and, contrary to what Dave's said above, they will intervene on the day although I expect it depends on how proactive your local team is. They certainly did on the telly.
Has the neighbour got hold of her yet? Personally I'd probably break in (making sound the house and paying for any repairs of course))

Out of interest how did you check that it wasn't a burglar/fire alarm? To my mind it sounds like either a smoke alarm that needs its battery changing or, more likely, an alarm clock. Is there a room in your house where you can hear it less? E.g. if it's going off in her bedroom (which perhaps is adjacent to yours) could you sleep on the sofa?"Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0

Thanks fluffnutter.
I had my tv on 72 last night trying to drown the noise out and I had to sleep with a pillow and the duvet over my head and I could still hear the thing!
Took all my self control not to take care of it myself lolFirst Date 08/11/2008, Moved In Together 01/06/2009, Engaged 01/01/10, Wedding Day 27/04/2013, Baby Moshie due 29/06/2019 :T0 -
I really really feel for you. I'm a noise nazi - this would have me shrieking in frustration. Break in."Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0

I'm a bit like that too I hear everything lol.
Was sooo tempted this morning at 4am I can tell you.
Equally annoying that I know if I did it to her all hell would break loose lolFirst Date 08/11/2008, Moved In Together 01/06/2009, Engaged 01/01/10, Wedding Day 27/04/2013, Baby Moshie due 29/06/2019 :T0 -
I once was tortured with a beeping noise from a neighbour's house when she went on holiday. It turned out to be the beep from her answering machine! It was so loud I almost went out of my mind.
Try their Dad and if he doesn't have keys, get a message to them any way you can, they probably know what the sound is.
Good luck.0
