But without the fault codes it could be anything.

This is the exact point. Get the codes and we can help.

I've got an old Mondeo down the back of the office in bits at the moment (E3), which lasted about 380k. It's been replaced with an '05' with 46k on it, purposely to run until licensing won't re-plate it. My new one is E4, and the sheer level of electronic gadgets on it is worrying me a little!

  • Lad that works for me has a 2003 plate TDCI with 160k on it... Ran well for the last 12 months since he's had it then all off a sudden Glow Plug light flashing... hard to start... ran lumpy when cold and blew white smoke and stank of Diesel... Also in Limp mode. Turned out an injector had lost its code. Recoded the injector and its been ok for the last few weeks... Time will tell...

Im guessing its not lost its code, They dont have the equipment to actually read the code on his early 2003 car.

In 2003 the fuel system changed, Late 2003 onwards you can read the codes with cheap equipment. £25 for the box off ebay, Just needs a laptop with a USB port.

But 2001 to early 2003 and you cannot read them.

The injectors probably faulty and they just reset the ECU so it will relearn the fuelling settings. It will go again when it runs out of trim on that injector.
Really it needs a new one. But proper ones are not cheap.

Too many bedroom boys flogging 2nd hand ones as reconditioned.

  • "Out of trim" was I what I actually meant when saying it had lost its code... No the ECU was not exactly reset... The injectors were recoded into the ECU with your box off of ebay.... F###in Super.Which then reset the trim values and as you say then lets the ECU relearn the fuelling.

Like I said time will tell... Im not convinced it will last either and will likely be kicking up an above knock threshold code and be needing new injectors before long... so far so good though.

F-Super is a bargain for coding the injectors on late 2003 onwards cars. £25 now?
A garage will charge £60+ to do the same thing.

The problem is early cars, Nothing cheap can read the codes on the early cars.

I have the F-Super box and a few other readers.

If it is injector related, would I need 4 new injectors or can you just replace the faulty one, or do they all go wrong together?

You can replace one, But usually the rest are not far behind.

But its not just a case of buying one and swapping it over. It then needs coding into the car to run 100%.

Is it easy to recode the injectors yourself?

If the error is "injector x is above knock threshold" can you just recode that injector or does it need replacing?

I'm taking it to the garage on Tuesday to get the diagnosis, hopefully it shows something!

Do you have a laptop? If yes buy the F-Super off ebay for £25 or less.

Install the drivers and software. Plug into the car ignition on and click read injector codes. Write them down.
If you can get a mirror and check to see if the codes match. They are on the rear of each injector.

Only do one injector at a time. Start at number 1 and enter the same code you read from it. This will reset the fuel trim for that injector.
You need to turn the ignition on and off a few times, But it tells you that on the screen, Wait 30 seconds with a countdown. Ignition on , ignition off...

After your done repeat for injector number 2. then 3 then 4. But only do one at a time. And make sure you write the codes down correctly.

Also this should be done with a cold engine.

After your done take it for a drive with varied speeds. Over the new couple of days it will relearn its fuel settings. So dont panic if its a bit noiser to start with.

It wont cure a faulty injector though.

    Anywhere near the midlands?

Thanks for the info, I'm in the North East of England so not close, will see what the garage says regards a faulty injector.

I did 130 miles in it yesterday without any issues but I was careful.
