Sorry to hear

Rest in peace Katie
I went through it in July and it was awful
still miss her so much but think of the happy times now and we had a lot of them in the 4 short months I had her. 0 -

Thank you all so much for your kind messages. I can see the keyboard now as the tears have dried for a while.
It was a hard and very sudden decision I had to make tonight. Katie was a Lhasa Apso who I rescued 6 years ago. She had spent the first 3 years as a breeding b*tch in a puppy farm and was badly neglected. She took a while to become a 'normal' dog as she had never been in a house or on a lead and was terrified of everyone and everything. For the first 4 years, I was the only person to see her true character, she was funny, intelligent and used to do things to make me laugh. (My brother used to say she was a waste of a dog!).
When I moved to my present home, she suddenly became this welcoming little soul who loved everyone and greeted all comers. She won everyone over and weedled her way into their hearts. (Even my brother thought she was wonderful).
Over about the last 4 months she went blind. She was managing well as long as furniture etc were kept in the same place. A week ago, she started crying on movement. I took her to the vet who thought she had slipped a disc in her neck, so put her on anti inflammatory tablets. He asked to see her in a weeks time. Three days ago, she started to walk in tight circles, with her head slightly on one side. I took her back to the vets Tuesday. It was noted that she also had nystagmus (rapid flicking of the eye side to side). She confirmed my worst (googled) fears that she had a brain tumour. The vet asked me to take her back in tonight for a steroid injection. It was the main vet who saw her tonight, and he confirmed everything the other vet had said, but also didn't think that the steroid injection would help. He agreed with me that the kindest thing for her would be to end her suffering. So there we are, I had to make a decision on the spot. I could have brought her home and let the next set of symptoms happen, which would have been fits, incontinence, etc. but to my mind, she had no quality of life. She must have been constantly dizzy with the nystagmus, and what life is there in walking around in circles until exhaustion.
I know I've done the right thing for her, she has nothing more to face now, but by god I will miss her. Thank you if you've managed to read this, but if you didn't, it doesn't matter. It has helped me to write it down. And now the tears are restarting..0 -
So sorry to hear you have lost her, its like losing one of the family, no words can help but you did do the right thing and didn't let her suffer.
I had to have my rescue dog put down due to a brain tumour, he had had a tumour on his eye exactly a year before and had to have his eye removed, they said it was unlikely to spread, but the following year he got the brain tumour and I had to have him pts.
Hugs to you. RIP Katie0 -
I'm weepy reading this. My sick dog has a brain tumour and has been managing ok on drugs for 2 1/2 years now, but I know the time will come, probably quite soon, when I will have to make the decision you have.
Take care xxSpend less now, work less later.0 -

It's incredibly hard to cope with losing a beloved pet but there are 2 positives to this (as I see it):
Katie was very ill and to not make the decision would have been unfair on her
You gave a poor dog the best 6 years of life she could ever have wished for, she obviously loved you
Take care.0 -
And the tears start again, thank you so much for the kind words. xx0
