Some friends of mine used to live in a house with a downstairs bathroom. It was off the kitchen. The strange thing was as well as having the main bathroom downstairs there was also an additional downstairs toilet. Upstairs was only the 3 bedrooms (2 double and 1 single).

In the end they converted the single bedroom into the bathroom and knocked through into the old bathroom to expand the kitchen into a kitchen diner.

Although they lost a bedroom in my opinion the new layout worked much better. The larger kitchen worked as a kitchen diner. That also meant they were able to move the dining table out of the living room which made that room much more spacious as well. The other downstairs toilet made much more sense with that layout also.

I live on a Victorian terrace where some of the houses still have downstairs bathrooms while others have moved the bathroom upstairs. Mine was moved up well before I bought the place. This means that my old 3rd bedroom is only really a lobby. I use it for a computer room. My neighbours still have 3 good size bedrooms but the kitchen is minute and the bathroom is beyond the kitchen. I would not have bought their house but they paid more for it than I did for mine probably because it had a proper 3rd bedroom and prices had increased slightly by then.
  • My grandparents' Victorian house had an upstairs bathroom but the only loo in the house (till about 1990) was the downstairs one adjoining the kitchen, so whilst you could have a bath or a wash upstairs you had to go downstairs if you needed the loo in the night :o In 1990 they finally had a loo fitted in the bathroom - there was plenty of space for one so not sure why it hadn't been done when the bathroom was originally put in......

  • My first house (rented) had a downstairs bathroom. We weren't keen, especially when I was pregnant with twins, but, found it invaluable when the children were young as we could put them in the bath then get on with the washing up in the kitchen (bathroom came off the kitchen).

When we moved we were glad to have an upstairs bathroom at last but soon realised that the few inconvenient trips downstairs during the night were nothing compared to the constant up and down during the day.

    Everyone's different though.

yes that is definitely something we've been considering since our 11'2 x 7'2 bathroom is likely too small to divide into bathroom + study/nursery.

We have a 15 x 10 ish main bedroom ( so bigger than the one in your link i think) are considering taking 4 foot off one side for a bathroom.

it is always a compromise though - a largebedroom turned into a fairly average sized one... hmm decisions
  • I know this thread is fairly old but I have lived in a large victorian terrace house for 28 years that has had a downstairs bathroom. It causes no problems and for the not so agile is a blessing (elderly relatives etc.). I do have a toilet upstairs too. But, I have a conditions called crohns disease which developed 14 years ago, so a downstairs bathroom was mandatory.

My kitchen is large and all the bedrooms are doubles with mine and my husbands bedroom being 17ft. I really like a downstairs bathroom. If I had the option, I would have 2 bathrooms, one up, one down. I dont understand the problems associated with it. Wear a dressing gown if you are required to cross the lounge in front of your in-laws. In fact, why would you wander about in just your PJ's anyway???? I would also like to point out my house cost £25,000 in 1984 on the southcoast and during purchase the downstairs bathroom was not even an issue.
  • I've got three houses with downstairs bathrooms ( & bedrooms), with kitchen/sitting-room upstairs. The whole scheme (translation for the English "council estate") is like that. The views of the lochs & mountains are better like that, albeit bedrooms are colder than normal..)

Been told it was designed by a woman...
