downstairs bathroom

Hi all, just wondering if having a downstairs bathroom would put you off buying a house? Or devalue it in anyway?

Would it be better to move the bathroom upstairs and have a bedroom downstairs?

All opinions welcome.

Depends on the buyer and the house! My first house was a Victorian terrace with a bathroom downstairs - worked fine for me as a young person living alone but would have been a PITA for a family or elderly person.

We rented a house with a downstairs bathroom and it wasn't too much of an issue.
The main problem I found were that we had to walk through the living room to get upstairs so if I had a shower and we had visitors I would have to walk past them.
Also they took the bathroom from upstairs to make it into a 3 bed property which inevitably meant the 3rd bedroom was very small (bathroom-sized!) and not much room left after a bed was put in there.
  • From a family point of view it wouldn't bother me as long as there was at least a toilet and basin upstairs as well.

Welcome! :) Depends on the house and the target market, if you can shift it upstairs without losing a bedroom or making one too small.

Our first house had the only bathroom downstairs.
Didn't bother us (other than when my wife was pregnant and needed multiple toilet trips during the night) but when selling just about every bit of feedback we received marked us down for it.

In reality, a toilet (at least) downstairs is very handy with small children especially when learning toilet training.

I only ask as i've just bought a house with a downstairs bathroom. There is no toilet upstairs. It doesn't bother me having it downstairs in the slightest.

My girlfriend and I have had a bit of a debate whether to move it upstairs or not.

At the moment the bathoom and smallest bedroom are fairly equal in size. I suppose I just wouldnt want to devalue the property or spend money on something if it doesn't bother the majority of people as it is.

I'm afraid I don’t like them. OH’s parents have a downstairs bathroom and when I visit I have to walk through the living room and dining room in my PJs looking a right mess in front of his family. Even if I were living on my own there, I’d find it inconvenient to walk all the way down there for a shower and then all the way back up again to get dressed. I can imagine it would be terrible if you were ill too – it’d be a long dash from bed to the loo in an emergency!

For me a downstairs bathroom would probably be a deal breaker (even though that’s probably irrational) unless the house was perfect otherwise.

I'd find it odd having a downstairs bedroom more than a downstairs bathroom.

Can't you just take your clothes with you to the bathroom?
