When i was pregnant Nov 05-Aug 06 the advice was only to avoid nuts if you have a history of allergies, asthma excema or nut allergies in your or partners family. As neither I or H have any allergies I did eat nuts, and did when breastfeeding too.
I make sure Lo gets plenty of exposure to germs though! ;-) He loves eating anything he finds on the floor...ive stopped worrying about it.

I suffer from slight asthma so it was recommended I don't eat them. Then when I checked with the MW after DH had told me she was all 'ah! don't deprive yourself of anything! all these bloody reseachers and their thesis get my goat. Everything in moderatilon and it will be fine.'

Oh! and can someone tell me what a clean house is?

A clean house is something I have in the mornings after I have done the cleaning and before anyone else wakes up.

I have a severe and potentially fatal nut allergy (I carry antihistamines and an adrenaline injection at all times) and the only thing I can put it down to is that my Mum ate peanuts by the handful when she was pregnant with me.

DD appears to be allergy free (I obviously couldn't eat nuts when I was pregnant) but this allergy is a pain to live with and I know my sisters won't be eating anything dodgy when they're pregnant as they don't want to risk having to deal with something like this.

It's not nice going into anaphylaxis....

Seriously though,I wonder where all these extreme allergies came from. It seems they just suddenly appeared within the last few years.

TJ - I was diagnosed when I was about 18 months old (so back in the very early 80s). At that time it was common to rub peanut butter on a teething toddlers gums for some reason and my parents twigged something was wrong when I swelled up like a beach ball.

I've eaten nuts accidentally a few times since and each time the reaction is worse. The last time was a couple of years ago and necessitated a stay in hospital on a drip :(

It's a horrible allergy to live with as mine is so bad I can be ill by touching things that have nut oil on. For instance, my ex once ate a Snickers on his way to work (he was banned from eating nuts so used to eat them in secret - he says the ability to eat Snickers again is the best thing about the break-up...) and when he came in 12 hours later he kissed me on the cheek and left a burn mark

A few weeks ago I was sitting at someone else's desk and helping someone out when the palms of my hands started itching like crazy. I had no clue what it was until I asked the person next to me if the desk owner had been eating nuts. I was told that she had been eating cashews a few days earlier. Thank God I didn't rub my mouth or my face... Scrubbing my hands and swallowing 3 Piriton finally stopped the itching.

I love food and it really does my head in that I can't eat a whole food group - especially when it looks really tasty.

SP - it must be terrible to have such an allergy. It must be something you were deficient in though because loads of mums eat peanuts when they are pregnant and have babies without allergies too. My daughter is allergic to peanuts (nowhere as severe as you thank goodness!) and she has exzema. I don't recall eating peanuts in quantity during my pregnancy though. My son (15 months older) has no allergies or skin conditions and I did the same throughout that pregnancy.

    :j :j

  • I guess I was just unlucky. I also have asthma and exzema and I'm aware that these things come in 3s.

I suppose if the theory about eating large quantities of things resulting in allergies is correct then DD should be allergic to oranges as at one point I was eating 4 bags of the things a day...

I feel for you having to deal with your daughter's allergy - even though I haven't lived at home now for 8 years my mum STILL reads the ingredients on everything she buys cos the habit has never gone away.

The most embarrassing thing is when someone offers me a biscuit/chocolate or something and I ask if I can see the box. It always looks like I'm being an idiot when I start reading through the ingredients. Oh - and I hate people mentioning it when I'm eating out because then I feel like a pariah.
