If it helps any further, ipods cheap too.

Where? 8Gb on my phone isn't enough seconhand from Kids/PAYG c.£10 for the MicroSD a couple of years back.

    2GB Nano @ £70 and 160GB (which I wouldn't use) @ £180 don't appear cheap.

The high end drain through consumer tech is higher than 30 years ago, it starts at much younger age with constant upgrades (via development and cynical marketing) together with duplication/multiple instances.

Phone/Sky rental is only a finance agreement of another type buying you a virtual throw away product. A capitalist dream.

Martin Lewis hi-lighted one chap on his TV program spending £150+ a month on SKY & Virgin, Phone, Broadband - don't think the consumer really understood why either.

Whether it directly impacts the ability of the young to afford housing is a bit of a red herring IMO as you don't have top follow the trend and more are beginning to realise that..

  • pretty sure that a 32" flatscreen that cost £100 second hand is not "the most amazing TV ever". i feel pretty confident that if i go down john lewis with £10,000 then i will be able to land something better.

    I'm sure you're right.

But - take my advice - your 'less than a morning's pay' of £10,000 would be better spent on something other than a flat screen television.

First Class return and a month in the Oberoi, Bali, would be more enjoyable.

Or if you want to invest it, you could buy a row of houses in Hull. Good for BTL.

What was your young nephew doing in your bedroom?

If you were trying to hide your reno status...you've just blown it! ;)

Maybe you are not trying to hide it?
  • Silly boy.

I made 500quid the other day for an afternoons work. Am I on 260k a year?

Was going to comment the exact same. In one 3 day period i earned more than £4,000. Doesnt mean im on £480k a year.

    I think this is cheap:

Quite seriously. Comes with a 5-year-guarantee so that's not much more than 50p a day over 5 years. Since many people spend more of their freetime staring at a TV screen than doing anything else it's quite a sensible purchase IMO.

£6,999, but hurry. They only have 7 left.

  • Can someone remind me again how flatscreen TV's are preventing young adults from buying their own home, I have just picked up the most amazing TV ever for less than a mornings work.

They are not, its low wages, high prices and big deposits and mortgage availability that are.

The reality is over the past 30-40 years relative prices have changed a lot.

Items such as TV, computers, media players have increased dramatically in quantity and fallen in price. Likewise food and clothes prices have fallen. Health, education, housing, childcare costs, etc have risen.

It is amazing to compare a Sony Walkman with an Ipod.

    Sorry chewy but you're mistaken.
    Please remember the rules.

Some members of the forum always get stuff below true value. Whether that be a TV or a house (if they should choose to buy outright with their large deposit). They always grab a bargain. They never have to beg their bank for £1500 overdrafts and they are on first name terms (and a few other terms) with quite a few of the political heirarchy. They are life's winners. HSW is in this group.

Admittedly some other members of the forum always overpay for property (and probably everything else like flashy TV's and the latest gadgets). They are always really struggling and worrying about debt. The margin calls and Alt-A timebombs will hit this group hard. They are the more bitter members of society as they usually have tenants in rent arrears and a roof which needs replacing. They are life's losers. HSW is not in this group.

Please try to remember who is in which group. It will help you avoid such an embarrassing mistake again.
