  • Ooooh I have a few!

One Christmas, from my ex, I got a very frumpy brown top more suitable for a 70 year old than a 35 year old, a U2 CD (I can't stand U2) and a kitchen roll holder. I think he had left it til Christmas Eve, and then panic bought in M&S and Tesco :-(

Another year, he bought me a pogo stick, and for my birthday one year, I got a kids paddling pool.

My mum also buys me random presents, for example, knickers that are 5 sizes too big (and are apple catchers), ornaments (even though we dont have ornaments in our house!), and last year's delight was a very heavy curb chain necklace with a very large and blingy "M" pendant! Not my style at all!

I know its the thought that counts but it would be lovely to have a Christmas Day where I didn't have to lie through my teeth!
  • Thought of another one! One Christmas, we went to visit my ex's mother on Boxing Day, drove all the way down there, to find that she hadn't prepared any dinner and we sat there starving until she produced my present, a toblerone bar that was a year out of date! We were so hungry, we had to eat it!

I think the worst was from my now husband, it was our first xmas together and we had been together nearly a year so we knew each other very well, so no excuses. He bought me some chunky ear rings that were designed for someone of middle age or older (I was 19 btw), some cheap purfume when he knew I was allegic to purfume. 2 little tealights and a cardboard stationary box. Luckily he's much better 10 years on, but only with my help. Saying that he did get me a food processor last year.

My sister got me a Twilight dvd last year, I hate that kind of film, I love horror. It wasn't just that, it wasn't even the first one!

Although very thoughtful, my FIL bought me a box of very very very expensive chocolates. Only 2 problems, one, I'm not keen on chocolate, two they contained liquors, I hate liquors. He knows that I only like the taste of beer. They didn't go to waste though my mum adored them.
Remember never judge someone that makes a mistake, because in six months time it may be you that makes the next mistake.

Now thinking about it, it is never easy to buy presents though..
Some of these are just not horror presents! One says they like wine and are surprised they got 12 bottles of white when they only drink pink, with screaming face... well, I really like red but I am sure I wouldn't have thought rose is a bad choice, I would have just thought I need to be more specific next time..
Though some people are not learning.. my MIL buys me very expensive chocolate every year, and while it is very luxurious and special chocolate, it has very large content of dark chocolate which I hate and OH just gets headache from.. I try to point her the right direction constantly, but last year OH just said it out loud, bluntly.

I absolutely hate it when someone does not give you any indication what they want but are always disapointed with what ever you buy.. I keep asking what to get my nieces, who have literally everything, I get no answer, ever, and every year I feel I bought wrong...

I tell OH what I want. Sometimes even send him links. I spell it out. I wish people gave me the same consideration back..

And some people just fight back - I once said to my OH and then MIL that I really want some good wok pan (I love cooking and my dad is a chef) and I was told kitchen items are not christmas presents. Well sorry, I am not going to spend £50 on a pan myself, while I really want one!! And I would rather have that then £50 wroth of creams and chocolate!!

My MIL once gave me a used black bobble hat which she took great delight in telling me came for the charity shop where she worked. It smelled strongly of hair oil or greasy hair and went into the bin as soon as she was gone. Next year she did much better - a packet of herbs in a handkerchief-sized piece of fabric which she'd "stitched together myself" !!! - Can't wait to see what it'll be this year!
Just because somebody is certain doesn't mean they are right!

This thread has had me in stitches. :rotfl:

Every Christmas when I was a kid, my dear aunty bought me clothes which were either the wrong size, unsuitable for my age group or simply not to my taste. The local charity shop always used to do well out of me come New Year!

The most infamous gem was the cardigan she got me when I was 14 – baby blue with little pandas all over it! I really wish I’d taken a picture, but you’ll have to take my word for how hideous and twee it was. It would have probably looked adorable on a 4-year-old, but at 14 I’d have been beaten up had I dared wear it outside the front door.
