Many many many years ago there was a story doing the rounds concerning a woman who had allegedly hatched an egg by incubating it in her bra !
I did a search on Snopes the other day but I could find no reference to it so I suppose it could be true. Probably not advisable for multiple births but it could cut down on energy costs.

Hi all. Just thought I would check in to see whats been going on. Having lots of fun with Pru, Henrietta and Dot. They are giving me hours of enjoyment and are so happy to see me when I go out and spend time with them. Can't believe how much rain we have been having. Still, the girls are fine with it as there are so many places to shelter in our garden.
All three girls have grown bigger in size, especially noticed a big difference with Dorothy. She has really filled out nicely. Prudence's eggs are weighing 60g now. I think we still have a couple of weeks to go before we have an egg from Dot and Henrietta.
LindseyM, have you started any building yet?

Thought you might like to see this pic of my hens in their favourite mid afternoon spot!

They're a lot of fun and 2 of them are getting really tame now. Margarita still isn't convinced I'm ok and Guinevere just won't come near me at all! But then she's just very nervous of everything.

They're definitely making their preferences known. DH brought home some Pak Choi from work - long story! - and they wolfed it down. Not impressed with lettuce at all though, wouldn't touch it. And they're not so keen on cabbage either! They go crazy for grass cuttings and dried mealworms. Having lots of fun with them!

Penelope Penguin - dying to know if your eggs have hatched yet!!!

    Hi all, JS, CW

I've been busy busy preparing the garden for our new feathered friends - gonna start building on the weekend, but just one question - the area where the coop run will be is currently just a big patch of mud  - would it be better to put flags down where the coop will be or to just build it up on the soil? I'm getting really excited now :j - I'll post pictures when i've got somethin to show :D

    Hi Lindsey,

Our hen house is just on the ground. There was some vegetation growing - mainly weeds! - and we just plonked it down on top of it!

Very exciting that you're getting closer to getting your hens!! Keep us updated!

    hi all,

I've been very busy putting down decking (with help from the chickens) and trying to get indoor jobs like painting doors done but needed to log in and say hello and to see whats been happening.

Lovely to hear that your girls have settled in well cw. So have ours, and you know that 'eating from your hand' stuff? Well, thats still going really well. They all love to eat corn out of my hand rather than straight off the ground, and they simply adore brocolli. Got a big bit yesterday and its pretty much been demolished!!! All thats left is the big thick stem. Only thing I am having a problem with is when I go outside with the box of mealworms....they literally fly over to me and start jumping up and down excitedly trying to reach the box. As I was about to do my poo collecting this morning I went outside with a latex glove on my hand but thought I would give them a few mealworms first. They always go absolutely CRAZY for them...I hold a mealworm between my fingers and SNAP its gone, only they always take the finger of the glove too which stretches and then snaps right back again. Dorothy has really grown in size and has began ducking right down when you stroke her...apparently this means she is ready to be mated, so the man we got them from said. So, maybe there will be an egg on the way from her very soon. They love human company too, as soon as I go out they come and say hello and if I walk away from them they are hot on my trail, all three running to stay with me. And if I am inside they sit outside the back door...waiting. Incredible.

LinsdeyM, I dont think you need worry about slabbing the run area. Ours was just a mud patch but we bought some bark chips (three big bags for a tenner at Homebase) and put a couple of them on the ground. They forage through the bark chips to get the grubs that lurk beneath and they love to push some aside to take a dust bath too.

Must get back to the painting and then cut the grass.042.gif
