An update if anyone is still reading this - after several emails back and forth where all I got were robo-replies which avoided answering my questions, I asked for their postal address so I could make a formal written complaint.
Full refund arrived in my husband's account the next day.
No idea why a paper letter should put the wind up 'em more than an email, but there you go. I may be paranoid about technology, but they seem to feel the same way about snail mail!
Will still be closing my account though, as their customer service was abysmal up until they capitulated. Plus I always felt awkward about using an organisation that was comfortable annexing the name of a notorious secret police outfit...lesson learned!0
