KGB deals rage

My husband bought a kgb deal for a hotel break. When he called the hotel to arrange a booking, they asked him to give them his credit card details over the phone 'for security reasons'... naturally he refused, considering it too great a risk.

Nowhere in the voucher t & cs did it mention he would be required to give these details, yet kgb are refusing to refund us, even though we consider the deal to not be 'as described'.

Any advice, money savers?

  • I'm fairly certain that's standard when booking hotel rooms. And I've only ever booked one hotel room myself...

  • When did you buy the voucher? If it's less than seven days ago you should be able to cancel it within the "cooling off" period. I would get on to your credit card company if not (assuming you bought the voucher with one) and discuss with them. Sounds dodge to me!

    Good luck!

    No need for this.

It is standard procedure for a hotel to ask this as they hold your details incase any further transactions are billed to your room, movies, bar, mini-bar etc. Nothing to fear here.

It would appear that your husband has never ever stayed in a hotel before.

I have booked hotel stays with kgb and groupon a few times. I have never been asked for, or would have given my credit card details out at that point? Sometimes once you are actually at the hotel credit card details may be asked for, for any extras that you may incur during the course of your stay, for example room service, drinks at the bar etc,.
There is no reason for the hotel to have them at the point of booking. It's not like they're securing the booking with a deposit, the hotel has been paid for already!! The only thing they should ask for is your voucher number.

I had a situation with groupon where i rang up to book a restaurant, and the owner not only wanted but demanded my credit card details before he let me book a table. Very very dodgy, and my suspicions were immedietly aroused...
I complained to groupon, and recieved a full refund. They agreed that asking for credit card details was not at all acceptable.
I would pursure kgb if i were you. They tend to respond eventually..
    Good luck.

Again it is not very very dodgy, it seems you havent stayed at many hotels or eaten at many restaurants. A lot ask for the details before you have arrived and over the phone. Just because some dont it doesnt mean they all dont they all have their own in house policies and procedures to follow. Pretty standard and I would have had no issues in doing either. Some restaurants have a cancellation policy and rightly so if people dont turn up on a whim
  • You are talking rubbish. :rotfl:i have just outlined an experience whereby i refused to supply credit card details when it was obvious it is for some nefarious purpose.:(
I travel frequently, and have probably booked and stayed in more hotels than you have had hot dinners.:) I eat out often and am very familiar with what is normal practice.
You on the other hand sound like an apologist for very questionable business practices ;)

If you're that bothered give a fake credit card number. I doubt they are going to do anything with it. There is nothing to charge so they won't have any need to feed it through. Change one of the digits (the last one) and see if they say anything.

Its not "obvious for some nefarious purpose". Its unusual for a restaurant to ask for a card number but I find it very unlikely that they are asking for it so they can conduct a villainous activity with it!

I would be very surprised if you have ever booked a hotel where they have not asked you for a card number? What sort of hotels are you staying at?

FYI, this particular restaurant was extremely dodgy, or at least the owners was and are now no longer trading,- nuff said:)
As to your point about being asked to produce credit card details when booking a hotel, you are spectacularly missing the point!!
You do NOT need to give your credit card details when booking a room that is already paid for, and i have never done this when booking with Groupon or KGB.
That is what the OP is asking!!!
