Indeed - Ireland also followed the same track as well with pretty poor results. Thankfully the SNP have always distanced themselves from that approach, not for example referring to that country as being part of an "arc of prosperity" with an independent Scotland.

I always thought of an arc as being part of a circle, but it seems this discussion has gone full circle as this was discussed previously.

why does something need to be manufactured in order for it to be of value as an export? if a company in SE england sells e.g. insurance to a company overseas, is that not a valid/worthy export?

Sure hope the SE aren't selling insurance to the East coast, USA.

Wouldn't be surprised if a lot of it landed on the good honest UK tax payers lap again, in one way or another.

Well Lloyd's of London managed to make it through the Napoleonic, Crimean, Franco-Prussian, First and Second World Wars without collapsing....

Just to keep up with irrelevant answers...

Here is another good Scottish export...

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk
The value of Scottish food and drink shipped to foreign markets increased 19 per cent between 2010 and 2011 to a record £5.4 billion. This means an official target to increase exports by a third has been exceeded six years early.
The vast bulk of the total – £4.23 billion – was accounted for by Scotch whisky. This represented a 23 per cent increase in sales of the drink compared to the previous year.
Performance in traditional markets varied between strong growth in Germany (18 per cent) and the US (31 per cent) and a slight fall in Spain (3.4 per cent).
However, the largest increase in sales was recorded in emerging markets for the drink such as Brazil (48 per cent), Singapore (44 per cent) and Taiwan (44.5 per cent).

Looks like that one is on the increase.

Whisky is a fantastic export. Only employs about 30000 people in Scotland and the industry is mostly foreign-owned but definitely a pillar of the economy.
