It comes to something when the able-bodied who can enjoy a full lifestyle start complaining about those that can rarely get out... ...forget worrying about the pennies saved on stamps for those that can't.

I was thinking along similar lines but more that when I was working money could be tight but for a few stamps I would only have to work a few minutes extra on one day to pay for them - even 15 minutes on minimum wage will buy 3 stamps. Just how does someone that CAN'T work find the extra money?
  • A saving is a saving in this economic crisis, i say don't knock it. If like someone else said spend most of your life inside and unwell from being disabled then a gesture like this is welcome. There are no perks to be being classed as disabled, but at least its a gesture. I for one will be taking them up on it.

There are people who are posting very bitter opinions about people they think are getting more than them in some way.

It's because they have a disability. How difficult is it to understand what that means?

Broadwood, you remind me of a miner I once knew, same age as me. I had worked hard all my life as a mechanic, then became disabled after an industrial accident. I am not going to explain to you what I went through, you would quite obviously be bored by it.

Anyway, this particular guy had received a massive payout when our local pit shut, as did many others. Some saved their dough, but he was one of those who went mad with it. Long distance holidays, new car, until eventually the money ran out. As he had been unemployed for so long without explanation, he could not find work. One day he was walking past me as I locked my small Motability car. "That's a nice car," he said "Did you get that from my taxes?"

I resisted the urge to remind him that he had paid no tax for many years, but picked my sticks up and hobbled into the house.

That kind of attitude, which classes all disabled people as hangers-on who are living off the rest of the country, deserves this retort - I hope that you never have to go through what most of us go endure. I am well aware that there are those who rip off the system and I would cheerfully report anyone I knew was doing that; but we are not all the same.
I think this job really needs
    a much bigger hammer.
  • I have just had a conversation with a lady who is intending to buy those stamps at a reduced cost and give them to her daughter who owns her own business......if there are to be reductions for pensioners it should be all pensioners,
Yes, this lady gets pension credit, but has in fact put all her savings a 5 figure amount into her daighters name so she qualifies for benefits. grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

    she is saving about £5
I would think the hiding of savings is a bigger issue than a fiver on stamps
A business user could save far more with franking/PPI

    - in that case report her to the DWP and do so now, do it here on this secure page
    - that will cost the stamps / council tax / mortgage interest relief / rent allowance and many other extras
    - the Revenue people will also come looking for the 'salted away money'
    - and the DWP will possibly put the individual in a criminal court and seize assets
    - but .. .. you had better be 100% sure you are correct in what you say before you make the report

That means they get what ever benefits and allowances they are legally and fairly entitled to. The point I made was that I don't also expect to pay extra on my utility bills to fund social tariffs or subsidise the cost of postage to fund £5 worth of free stamps to one select group of citizens. Similarly I don't wish to pay extra on my car insurance to make up for the cost of those who choose to drive around without insurance either, but we all grudgingly have to. Same applies to the TV licence. Those who have to pay for one end up paying extra to cover the cost of detector vans and probably also to cover the over-75's not being required to pay. Many who pay struggle to feed their families while many who don't pay could easily afford to. How is that fair?

As for me reminding you of your miner friend, I'm not sure how you know anything much about my work or health history. I haven't accused you of anything. All I (and many people) get bitter about is unfairness and (until now) the unchecked abuse of the welfare system.

What is sadly lacking in the UK in 2012 is fairness.

Take it up with RM if you don't like it.

Or please take my problems and £5 of stamps, I will give both away willingly!

I like many other MSE users was prudent and bought a fair amount of stamps pre-rise, but am currently being evaluated for a rare disease at a one of a kind national clinical unit, which means posting off blood samples every fortnight. Naturally the Hospital supplies me with the packaging so as to meet the legal requirements, but I have to pay for the postage at £2.70 worth of stamps a time. So my stock has been depleted.

I am in favour of the scheme but am slightly concerned that people will be able to apply multiple times just by going to a different post office.
