Gambling addict state of affairs

Hi guys.

This is my current situation:

Bank Balance £0
Gambling company 1 - I owe £3000
Gambling company 2 - I owe £1000
Gambling company 3 - I owe £500
Gambling company 4 - I owe £500
Wonga - I owe £1100
Other - I owe £500

I get paid around £1300 per month.

I have not bet for around a week. I can survive until the end of the month via selling my phone, eating cheap foods, walking instead of driving etc...

Yeah i got myself deep in the crap - but I have personal reasons for why I went so off the rails.

I feel like taking out a loan but I am scared of spurious companies - I doubt any good companies would take me on as a young male gambling addict.

I have had companies offer my loans but quite high interest and not sure i trust them.

What is the best thing to do in my situation?

Thanks

Well done for acknowledging your problem and for managing not to gamble for a week.

Financially, you should try to pay off your Wonga loan ASAP as they are likely to be charging an exorbitant rate. It's best to do a full statement of accounts (SOA) so people can help work out where you can reduce your outgoings so that you can pay off your debts. http://www.stoozing.com/msoc/soacalc.php

There's a support thread for ex and would be ex gamblers.

What gambling companies give credit beyond spreadbetting?

Do a SOA and then people can help.

I joined spreadex at 18 and they would have comfortably let me rack up £10k in debt.

    It is madness!

I will have a look at an SOA

    Alright buddy,

Being in a similar state of affairs I can completely understand what you are going through. I wouldn't wish a gambling addiction on even my worst enemy.

Can you give details on what the situation is with the gambling companies you owe money to - ie is there any interest, what are the repayments like. I would defo pay off wonga first!

The idea of selling your phone and walking are great ideas; it shows that you are taking responsibility for your actions!

Last tip; do not borrow any more money!

    Waiting for your reply

Btw i am an ex gambler aswell 20 year old male -

It means a lot to me that you joined this website just to reply to my post - I am very similar age to you - I will send you a message with my SKYPE address - maybe we can have a chat later and support each other through this?

I was also addicted to marijuana for 3 years and quit that in a heartbeat - is way easier than quitting gambling

I find it appauling they way this young man is being treated, don't you think if we could all say things like 'stop making excuses and stop gambling' it would be a helluva lot easier for gambling addicts? Whilst I also see gambling as stupidity it is also an addiction so if you have nothing helpful to say then perhaps it would be better off if you posted elsewhere on the forum as you are all more then capable of offering good, helpful and valued advice - just not in this case.

With regards to the OP - You need to find yourself a a Gamblers Anonymous meeting, just search it and you will hopefully find one close to you. As to your current state of finances I am afraid that so long as you continue to gamble they will stay this way.
  • Firstly, well done for owning up to your addiction, that was probably the hard part (though not gambling for a week doesn't mean that you are cured and I'm sure you know that).

Secondly, get some professional help. Now. Whilst you accept you have a problem. You need help and regular support to deal with it. Contact one of the helplines or your GP.....they WILL help without judging you.

Thirdly, seek professional help for your financial problems. Don't try to deal with them piecemeal because they will seem overwhelming and will likely drive you back to gambling to try to pay them back. Is there someone you trust that you could manage your account for you and who would give you an agreed allowance each month? Go over to Debt Free Wannabe - there is lots of advice over there as well as contact details for the some of the debt counselling services.

Fourthly, destroy any credit cards you have and give your debit card to someone to hold for you. Disconnect your internet. Do whatever you have to do to stop accessing the gambling dens!

    Good luck!
