you say you dont tip because they get the minimum wage anyway
anyone who thinks this has never worked in a good restaurant or bar
i have spent the last 3 years working in top class restaurants and bars and the reason i do over working in the supermarket, because i enjoy it and because of the extra £50 a week in tips
whats wrong with leaving a tip for the people who have waited on you hand and foot for the last few hours.
its people like this that take service for granted that always get bad service because they treat staff like crap from the start!! A professional waiter or bartender can tell what sort of person you are from the momenet they start interacting with you and you attitude will often dictate theirs.
try this next time you go into a restaurant
SMILE and actually be nice to the waiter talk to them you will probably find they are much more willing to do whatever you ask.
the difference between good service and great service is unnoticed to most people only bad service ever goes noted. thats the point if you go to a restaurant and dont have a compliant you have probably had great service. remember the people are there to serve you and help you have a great time in a place you will probably be spending a lot of money anyway.
you dont expect the checkout guy to arrange something that isnt on the menu for you or get you a taxi when you have finished just beep beep beep.
thats why you tip your waiter because they make your night what it is. im not talking about a meal at some crappy national chain where most are 16 year old school kids. im talking about a good restaurant with many professional employees who actually enjoy their job.
i always give great service to all my customers and beleive that what i do is not just a job but a prefession and a career. its just a shame that it does nto get the recognition in this country that it does in others.
anyway i think you should always tip your waiter whatever you think of their wages as long as you get good service from them.

So when you travel by train, do you tip the Train Driver for a good ride, do you tip everyone whom gives you an excellent service. I bet you dont!
And do you declare your £200/£300 per month to the tax man?:beer:0 -

lol, you are their to do a job, like we all do. If you worked at a good restaurant and give the customers shoody service you wouldnt have a job. I dont need to do anything when i go to a good restaurant apart to expect good quality service, dont need to smile or like the staff. What makes you feel that you deserve a tip more than any other worker, say it ur bin man road sweeper policeman nurse doctor?Non Gradus Anus Rodentum!0 -
I do often think that my poor hard working girlfriend should be tipped by her 'customers'.
Tip accident and emergency nurses? Noo, why not shout at them because you've got to wait to be seen
We tip people that we have face to face contact with because we feel guilty. Guilty they are doing the jobs we don't have to, like carry our bags, carry our food, drive us places when we are drunk.0 -
As a coach driver conducting holiday tours if it was not for the tips there would be an even bigger driver shortage than there is not saying tipping should be depended on but as we stand no tips no tour drivers and you could not get rid of granny for a week. I think in the not to distant future there will be a big change in my industry and the wages will have to go up but that will put all the prices up and put some companies out of business
Ps I do tip in restaurants when I am off duty0 -

maybe i should start asking the parents of the children i teach for a tip?
it's just ridiculous...since this thread started ive been out a couple of times and made an even more conscious effort to not tip.0 -
It really does depend on the service.
I've eaten out four times in the past couple of weeks.
Once I left no tip. The service was ok but that was it.
Once I rounded up to the nearest note (left £30 for a £28 bill). Service was good - nothing to write home about - just what you'd expect
Once I left a tip of just under 10% (£60-odd dinner, gave them the change that we had between us!). The service was excellent and the waitress was pleasant even though she was busy.
Today I tipped about 15%. Went out for lunch and couldn't fault the waitress. We were sitting outside and nothing was too much for her and she definitely "enhanced the eating experience". The place was packed (outside anyway) and she cleared tables, brought drinks and remembered not only what the specials were but what they cost!We may not have it all together, but together we have it all

I've done loads of jobs over the years, from waitressing and hairdressing, to quite well paid professional jobs, and now I'm at Uni retraining to be a teacher, and although I've earned a bit in tips, I've usually had a reasonable minimum wage.
I don't tip if I have had reasonable service in a restaurant because as other posters have said, this is a minimum expectation. BUT...I do tip if I have had exceptional service, and I have also tipped the chef (only fair - they've made the food after all).
When I was hairdressing I worked with a lady who made at least £30 a day in tips, come Christmas she was getting massive tips (one customer tipped her £200) so basically you are looking at tax free income of £6000 (minimum), which topped her wages up to over £30 K. To me - that's not a low wage, and takes the mick when she's not paying tax on her earnings like I have to.
I'm amazed the inland revenue haven't made tipping illegal - they must lose millions through tipping!

For the people saying 'I dont tip the postman / dustman' etc....dont you give them a one off tip at Xmas ?In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and has been widely regarded as a bad move.
