Do you tip in restaurants?

I don’t mind tipping but actually feel a little embarrassed if I don’t leave some change on the little plate as we leave the table.
If meal and service has been good I don’t mind paying around 10%. If average I may just leave some small change e.g. if bill is £19, will leave £20.
I don’t like the idea of tipping to be honest. If I go to Mcdonalds (only bc of son) I don’t tip there, so why should a restaurant be special.
Only concern I have on tipping is – are the tips really shared between the waiters and bar staff? And I would be interesting to know after reading this thread if they are underpaid below the min. wage, and depend on the tips.0 -
i always tip- it just makes me feel good0

Having also worked in a McDonalds, even if you wanted to tip it wouldn't be accepted, as McD's crewmembers aren't allowed to accept tips. And let's face it, the type of service isn't comparable - you won't get the food brought to your table, hot and fresh, on a busy Saturday in McDonalds!Only concern I have on tipping is – are the tips really shared between the waiters and bar staff? Credit card tips ARE used to bump up wait staff wages from a rate below minimum wage to the minimum wage - if those tips have been received; otherwise the restaurant has to make up the difference. Don't know if this is a universal policy, but it certainly applied where I worked. The argument is that CC tips are company property as the tip is written on a company-headed till roll, and that therefore the company is justified in using them to make up part of a waiter/eresses wages. Which stinks, if you ask me, but hey.
As for sharing tips between bar staff, chefs, etc. it varies between restaurants. Where I worked it was at the wait staff's discretion, although the smart ones would cut the others in. I always 'tipped out' (gave a percentage of my take to) the barman on the service bar (where the restaurant drinks are made), and the window chef (the dude who plates up and presents the food to the wait staff), as it's well worth keeping them sweet - if I forgot to ring a drinks or food order through I could bat my eyelashes and get them made 'on the fly' because I always cut them in. When I was on the front bar (i.e. the main bar) we used to get our own tips because we used to flare when we made our cocktails and people loved it. Chefs get paid more (usually £1.50 - £3 per hour more than wait or bar staff), so they're all right - in fact, the senior chefs often get more than some managers.0 -
I rarely tip, I dont see why people should feel they have too aswell. The amount of places that have the card machines rigged up for tipping is getting ridiculous!A dAy WiThOuT wInE iS lIkE a DaY wItHoUt SuNsHiNe0

I object to tipping on the grounds that I am already paying for the service through the high price of the food and wine.0

I only tip if the service has been good. If my waiter/ess has not provided a good service then I have no compunction in not tipping.0

Yes I tip if the service has been extremely good.
Yes I agree that you are already paying for the service!
Peeps tip Coach Drivers, Taxi Drivers. But Peeps dont tip Train Drivers, or Airline Pilots. So really peeps shouldnt tip at all IMHO?0 -
Yes I tip, I really appreciate a first class front of house service, Good waiting staff can make all the difference, between a good meal and a great meal.
Attentive, quick, and perceptive staff always get the thumbs up from me. Sadly in this country waiting on, is percieved to be a low skill profession, and hence some are treated as such.0
