Yes I tip, I really appreciate a first class front of house service, Good waiting staff can make all the difference, between a good meal and a great meal.
Attentive, quick, and perceptive staff always get the thumbs up from me. Sadly in this country waiting on, is percieved to be a low skill profession, and hence some are treated as such.
Gas Meter/ Electric Meter readers, Dustmen are a low skilled proffession. But peeps dont tip them!;)0 -
i dont think ive ever found a waiter that has made a good meal into a great meal, its all about the atmosphere, company, food etc...the waiter? makes no difference to be honest...sometimes you notice a bad one, but it doesnt make much difference at the end of the day
should i be tipping postmen/milkmen? the cable guy? where would it end?!?0 -
i suppose same situation applies with taxi drivers? Do you tip them or not?
Usually i let them keep the change i.e. if charge is £9.50 i give them a tenner. Only is service has been really good have i left an extra 10%.0 -
Have to say I find the whole tipping thing a bit of a minefield. Generally I do tip but not very much - usually works out about £1 a head for the group. Tipping by percentage seems bizarre to me. It takes no more effort for a waiter to bring a plate of chips and gravy to you as it does to bring a plate of lobster and caviar so why should they get a bigger tip for bringing the latter?
I agree with the previous poster who asked why the punter should support the poor wages paid to waiters by tipping.0 -
I have worked in catering my whole life- front and back of house and I know how much tips are relied on. The only time I don't leave a tip is if the service and/or food is particularly poor.
in the last place i worked we had a major problem- the food was great but a few of the waitressing staff were downright rude and abrupt with customers. The rest of us suffered as tips were always low when they were working.0 -
Whatever persons employment, they chose to do it. If they want more money then they go for a different job. Peoplle work to provide a service to customers, and that is accounted for in the Bill/Ticket/Invoice etc. So really IMHO tipping is extra and should not be expected!!0

I disagree with tipping if it's expected, but retain the right to tip for exceptional service - but I rarely do. I think the idea that wages need supplimenting by tips, therefore encouraging staff to be extra nice and extra helpful is probably where it came from, but a properly managed place should insist on those standards anyway, and pay a proper wage.Whitegoodshelp0

I've stopped tipping taxi drivers. The number of them I've had brag to me about second homes, then charge me a fiver for a 1 mile journey. They pay sod all tax and don't deserve any more money out of your pocket0

you say you dont tip because they get the minimum wage anyway
anyone who thinks this has never worked in a good restaurant or bar
i have spent the last 3 years working in top class restaurants and bars and the reason i do over working in the supermarket, because i enjoy it and because of the extra £50 a week in tips
whats wrong with leaving a tip for the people who have waited on you hand and foot for the last few hours.
its people like this that take service for granted that always get bad service because they treat staff like crap from the start!! A professional waiter or bartender can tell what sort of person you are from the momenet they start interacting with you and you attitude will often dictate theirs.
try this next time you go into a restaurant
SMILE and actually be nice to the waiter talk to them you will probably find they are much more willing to do whatever you ask.
the difference between good service and great service is unnoticed to most people only bad service ever goes noted. thats the point if you go to a restaurant and dont have a compliant you have probably had great service. remember the people are there to serve you and help you have a great time in a place you will probably be spending a lot of money anyway.
you dont expect the checkout guy to arrange something that isnt on the menu for you or get you a taxi when you have finished just beep beep beep.
thats why you tip your waiter because they make your night what it is. im not talking about a meal at some crappy national chain where most are 16 year old school kids. im talking about a good restaurant with many professional employees who actually enjoy their job.
i always give great service to all my customers and beleive that what i do is not just a job but a prefession and a career. its just a shame that it does nto get the recognition in this country that it does in others.
anyway i think you should always tip your waiter whatever you think of their wages as long as you get good service from them.
rant over
